I am so excited about fishing New Brunswick again this year but then again I'm excited every year I get to go fishing, however this year it's my my year to fish for muskie and striper.

A few weeks ago I opened my fishing NB Facebook page and saw a message from fishing friend Ron who was selling a bunch of his muskie lures and gave me the first chance to snap them up and I did.

I was going to pick them up at the first muskie meeting of the year but that didn't happen as my computer died Saturday morning. It would have been my first muskie meeting too. So glad Casey was going because he picked my lures up and dropped them off at my house where I ripped them open like a kid at Christmas.

I thought they would fit in a couple of my Plano boxes but they were a tad too big for the ones I have. Okay way too big. I'll be heading out before fishing starts to pick up a couple of Mann sized Plano boxes. They will fit perfectly in the tackle bag Casey gave me the last time he was in town.

I'm sure Jenny was pleased that I cleared off the kitchen table to layout my musky lures so I could take a few pictures of them.

Yesterday morning I had zero muskie lures, today I have 22 awesome musky lures. Yesterday morning I was eager for fishing season to begin, today I'm itching to try these new lures out. I guess I just have to dream about it for the next few weeks.

Watch the waters as you'll likely see me and my float tube fishing muskie and stripers. That would be a funny site to see me being dragged from Fredericton to Saint John in a float tube being pulled by a big ole striper.

Now I'm off to eBay to see what other muskie lures I can find. I'd like to find some nice muskie spinner baits as they are one of my favourites to fish.

I was raised in Ontario and only ever got to ice fish once. It was a lot of fun but we mostly drank and flew around the ice on our snowmobiles.

The fish hut we stayed in was more like a hotel on ice as it was huge and even had bunk beds.

Many years went by, 40 to be exact, and I had my first time ice fishing in New Brunswick. We fished from a ice fishing hut so it was pretty comfortable. The only thing about having a fish hut is that it's pretty much stuck in one place all winter.

This year we didn't use the fish hut, which has now been converted to a garden shed. We used an auger to drill a couple of holes where we wanted to fish and when that did pan out it's just a matter of relocating and cutting a new hole.

I first day out this year it was so cold and windy it was hard to stay out on the ice. We stayed for a while but nothing was happening so we headed back to shore to fish another day. That day was yesterday.

Casey checked on the New Brunswick Fishing Forum to see where other ice fishers were catching smelt. Casey had a couple of places in mind and then checked the tide times so we would be there at the right time. We did our hardwater fishing at Rexton.

I guess others were watching the tides as well because when we arrived there were people who just arrived heading to the fish huts.

That Sinking Feeling

Before we carried all our ice fishing gear and supplies out on the ice we walked out to talk with some people and see what's happening. The first thing we notices was a couple of guys drilling holes behind their fish hut.

When we asked about it they told us their friends fish hut had sunk into the ice. They had dragged it out of there and set it back up on the ice. Because it was such a beautiful day they decided to just fish outside for the day.

Then I noticed two fish huts that looked almost identical but one was about 3 feet shorter than the other. It wasn't until someone told me it was sunk in the ice that I realized it wasn't built so short.

Hmmm I thought it might be tough ice fishing while laying down because it was too short to sit on a chair and fish.

Not sure how they will get that out of there.

Time To Catch Us Some Smelts

After chatting for a few minutes we headed back to pick up our fishing gear and pick a spot to start drilling for smelts. The ice was so thick that we almost ran out of auger before breaking through the ice.

When we cut through the ice it was about 3 feet thick and almost no water under it. The tide was out and when we cut through the last inch of ice the auger hit the bottom and stirred up a mess.

Achin' For The Bacon

I was sitting on my comfy armchair watching the boob-tube a couple of weeks ago and something came on the tube about bacon and BAM I thought I might just bring some small pieces of bacon ice fishing and see if the smelt would like it and they did.

I would have been the first catching smelt if I wasn't setting the hook like I had a 3 pound bass on the end instead of a 3 ounce smelt. I was getting strike after strike but wasn't catching anything, until Casey suggested I set the hook a bit easier.

I also was putting too much bacon on the hooks making it hard for the smelt to get it in there mouth so they would just try and yank pieces off the bacon. I took most of the bacon off the hooks and left just a tiny piece on the hook. What a big difference that made.

Best Day of Smelt Fishing I've Ever Had

Everything was great. The sky was clear all day. There was not even a little breeze and the temperature was close to zero. The scenery was so nice I had my camera in hand most of the day. And we caught smelt. Who could ask for more. We didn't catch a bucket load of smelt but enough to keep us entertained and I'm looking forward to going back again, soon.

I've waited almost 10 years to feel as good as I do now so I plan to make 2013 my biggest fishing year since having heart attack in 2004 that set me right on my ass. It took me four years just to pass my stress test so I was allowed to drive and fish again.

Even though I passed the stress test and was allowed to go fishing I was still pretty much a weakling for the next few years. I've even had to pass my fishing rod over to Jamie a time or two when the fish I had on wore me out before I could land it.

Each year I got a little stronger until last year when I was able to land every fish. My confidence level was increasing as well and I even went on a musky fishing adventure at the end of last year. We didn't get a musky but I did get a 25" chain pickerel without any help.

Time To Take It To The Next Level

I have been so excited about doing some muskie fishing in 2013 so you can imagine how excited I got when Ron, a Facebook friend offered me some of his muskie lures at a price I couldn't turn down. He even sent me a picture of each lure lying next to a measuring tape so I could see the colour, style and length.

I have two Plano boxes just waiting for my new muskie lures. Casey is giving me a tackle bag that will hold the bigger Plano boxes. Now I just have to wait for our New Brunswick fishing season to open.

I was on FishingFury.com this morning to see what was going on and saw a page with a very cool looking RV. It looks like it is a big boat and even backed halfway into the water like it was about to launch and then…

Well see for yourself.

Haven't seen any of these will fishing New Brunswick. Gotta get me one of these.

Jenny and I went up to Canadian Tire on the weekend to pickup some gardening stuff so I am ready to start planting seeds earlier this year. As we headed toward the lighting section my eyes caught a glimpse of a fishing lure in a bin.

Jenny kept walking and by the time she realized I wasn't next to her I had picked three of my favourite Rapala lures from the bin and stuck them in the cart. Then I quickly caught up to her as if I'd never stopped.

I would like to have grabbed an entire armful of Rapala lures but we were there for gardening supplies and have a limited budget so I had to use some self-control. These are the three lures I just added to my small collection of lures.
