The Buzz of Bringing Mike Vick to the Rams Posted: 18 Jan 2010 11:37 PM PST Yep, just as I guessed a couple of weeks ago when he ran the poll on his blog, here's Bernie Miklasz in a column this morning campaigning for Michael Vick as the next Rams QB, declaring the move safe from a PR standpoint because of that poll, which came in 62% pro-Vick. Personally I think Bernie should be ashamed. "Vick would bring buzz to the Rams," says the columnist who apparently doesn't think the Rams have enough issues to deal with this coming offseason. Yeah, so would sticking your ass in a bucketful of hornets; I don't hear you recommending that. There's nothing about having a felon who's barely played for three years, isn't a remotely-accurate QB, isn't suited for the Ram offense, doesn't have that great a head for the game, doesn't remotely fit the team's commitment to building a roster of men with good character, that represents any kind of buzz this franchise needs to have. Especially the felon part. But instead Bernie has manufactured, nurtured, and now sprung this "story" that at a minimum is going to be a distraction in Rams Nation until Vick signs somewhere (he's supposedly going to have multiple options if the Eagles let him go.) It's crap journalism on Miklasz's part. The "buzz" he says he wants is all about him; it doesn't have anything to do with good football. It doesn't help this franchise or its fans. It's only an unwelcome, unthinkable distraction. It'll be crap football for any team to sign Michael Vick to do anything more than the gimmick role he had in Philadelphia this season. And I don't even want to see him here for that. I implore Steve Spagnuolo, Billy Devaney, and Chip and Lucia Rosenbloom not to bring this half-assed publicity stunt by a bored columnist into fruition. |
Chan Gailey Now the Front Runner to Be the Bills New Head Coach Posted: 18 Jan 2010 08:47 PM PST
According to multiple reports from The Buffalo News, Chan Gailey has catapulted to the forefront as the Bills' next head coach. The former Dallas Cowboys and Georgia Tech head coach could become the next head coach in Buffalo within the next few days. Mark Gaughan's article also states that Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is not going to be the Bills' choice for the job. The Bills have been seeking a head coaching candidate with prior head coaching experience and an offensive mind, and Gailey matches that description. He was the head man in Dallas in 1998 and 1999, and reached the playoffs in both seasons. From 2002 until 2007, Gailey was the head coach at Georgia Tech comprising an overall record of 44-33. During his six seasons with the Yellow Jackets, Gailey guided Tech to six consecutive bowl games. Gailey has had several stints in the NFL an offensive coordinator. He first cut his teeth as an offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos in 1989 & 1990. He served as an offensive aid with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1994 until 1997. After his two years in Dallas, Gailey landed with the Miami Dolphins in 2000 & 2001. His most recent NFL gig was with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008. Gailey was fired by new Chiefs head coach Todd Haley two weeks before the start of the season in 2009. Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, via his Twitter account, indicates that Gailey and the Bills met last week and that barring a breakdown over the next few days, it looks as though this could be a done deal and Gailey will be the guy. |

Dolphins Close to Being Out Of Options At Defensive Coordinator Spot Posted: 18 Jan 2010 07:45 PM PST
Both Al Groh, and Keith Butler, who were believed to be the front runners for the job, declined the Dolphins offers, and while Butler stayed put in Pittsburgh as their linebackers coach, Groh took the defensive coordinator spot at Georgia Tech. The Dolphins now are down to only a few select guys, one of whom is already in their organization, in Todd Bowles. It's shaping up as if Bowles will be almost handed the job. The Dolphins clock is running out to find a defensive mind to fill the empty spot. The Dolphins are on a schedule per say, as they signed themselves up to coach the South team in the Senior Bowl in the upcoming weeks. The Dolphins are believed to be interested in Pepper Johnson, the young defensive lines coach for the New England Patriots, Bowles, our secondary coach, and Bryan Cox, the former linebacker for the Fins back in the '90s. I believe that there is somehow a darkhorse in all of this, and that it may be a guy along the lines of Rob Ryan. |
Broncos Part Ways With Defensive Coordinator Mike Nolan Posted: 18 Jan 2010 06:25 PM PST In yet another baffling change in Denver, the Broncos have parted ways with defensive coordinator Mike Nolan after only one season. Nolan, who transformed the Broncos from the 4-3 to the 3-4, improved the Broncos ranking from 30th to 7th seventh overall in the NFL, allowing just 315 yards per game, but it was 26th against the run (128.7 ypg). It ranked third against the pass (186.3 ypg). Nolan is reported to be interested in the defensive coordinator opening in Miami. Strange occurrences like this are becoming the norm in Denver ever since Josh McDaniels has taken over the helm in Denver. |

Cowboys Owner Jones Keeping Wade Phillips as Head Coach Posted: 18 Jan 2010 10:35 AM PST The Cowboys are keeping things as is, as reports say that owner Jerry Jones, despite the playoff loss to the Vikings, will be keeping coach Wade Phillips and the rest of the coaching staff around. Jones reportedly told the players that the team is closer to a title. Several players left the team meeting saying that management wants to keep things the way they are, an indication that Jones will pick up the team option on Phillips' contract for next season. The Cowboys had a winning record in the final month and won a playoff game, things they had not done since 1996. They also won the division for the second time in three years. Jones and Phillips did not speak with reporters Monday. |
The Cardinals Biggest Question – the Future of QB Kurt Warner Posted: 18 Jan 2010 07:32 AM PST
"I think we just continue to build on what a lot of people never expected for this organization," he said. "It's tough to go to the Super Bowl every year. It's tough to win your division two years in a row. You have to understand when it comes playoff time if you don't bring your best performance you get beat. That doesn't mean you had a lousy season." When it comes to coming back in 2010, it’s going to be a answer that Warner says he’ll have sooner rather than later. For now, he said he and his wife planned to get away for a bit, but his decision won't be drawn-out, like that of a fellow NFC quarterback that is still playing. "It won't be long. That's all I can say," he said. "I don't really have a date or a time but I want to make my decision real quickly for all parties involved, but I don't really know exactly when that will come." |
Eagles Running Back Brian Westbrook Facing Retirement? Posted: 18 Jan 2010 07:15 AM PST
It’s been tough as of late for Westbrook, who suffered a nasty concussion last season vs the Redskins, and also has been suffering from knee issues. Now it appears that the running back is talking about leaving the game, as there’s talk he may retire. WIP’s Howard Eskin reported Sunday night on NBC Philadelphia’s Sports Final that the running back may have to retire. Eskin said that the issue is not only the concussions, but also his left knee. The back has had multiple surgeries on that knee, and he will be visiting doctors in the near future for additional opinions about whether he can still play. PFT.com reports Eskin saying “there’s “almost no chance” Westbrook will play for the Eagles again (he’s due to earn a $7.25 million salary in 2010), and that he might have trouble passing a physical for another team.” It would be a tough end for Westbrook, who at one point considered one of, if not the most dangerous back in football. In his 8-year career, he has rushed for 5,995 yards (4.6 per carry), and he has caught 426 passes for 3,790 yards. Westbrook also has scored 66 career touchdowns. |
