Bears Fans Need to Make Sure Not to Drink the Kool-Aid Posted: 29 Jan 2010 01:44 PM PST Okay, I was over at ChicagoBears.com drinking the kool-aid today. I had to spit it out. I was checking out Larry Mayers question and answer piece and came across this question about the length of time it is taking to fill the coordinator positions (check out the entire Chalk Talk here). Larry Mayer – Senior Writer on ChicagoBears.com
So what about Tom Clements? Access denied. What about the several candidates who have turned down interviewing with the Bears? Snubbed!
That is because they haven't had very many people to interview yet. How can you offer a contract to a guy who says that they are not interested in coming in for an interview?
It also shows that the offensive coordinator will have no say in the staff underneath him that he is to coordinate. That doesn't seem very appealing!
Okay first Larry Mayer gives us ONE example of a quick hire as proof that the Bears know what they are doing. Then he gives us ONE example of someone who turned down the Bears as too few a sampling to prove that the Bears are bungling the searches. You cannot have it both ways.
Yes he was the first available. He was also the first (not the only) to say NO to an interview!
Very very telling.
This is a major corporation. One that has revenues in the billions. This major corporation is also one of the founding organizations in the league. In fact, one might argue that without the Chicago Bears and George Halas, we might not have the very sport that brings out our passion. Our passion which at the moment does happen to be negative, because of how far this pillar of the NFL has fallen. AND this is a senior executive position. Think how many coaches serve underneath the coordinator. Think how many assistants they have. Think how many players they coach…half the team! As for 3 weeks being just a drop in the bucket…we only have a few short weeks before coordinators need to start reviewing college film and start making their short lists of draft picks. This "major corporation" is on a deadline. Our coordinators need to determine the holes that need filling and the likelyhood of filling them through the draft or through free agency. Time is not on the Bears' side. Time is not on Lovie Smith's side. I don't have time to swallow the kool-aid, so I will spit it out! |

What Type of Offseason Will This Be for Eagles WR DeSean Jackson? Posted: 29 Jan 2010 12:43 PM PST When DeSean Jackson signed with Drew Rosenhaus this season you knew that it probably meant trouble. They couldn't do anything during the season, but now that the season is over it's a different story. Jackson is signed through 2011 but is not scheduled to make the kind of money a Pro Bowl receiver earns (he's scheduled to make less than a third of what Reggie Brown makes). Rosenhaus has the reputation to be very aggressive with contract talks and convince his players they are worth the big bucks. Jackson is definitely worth more than he's scheduled to be paid, but the Eagles might not be ready to negotiate. If they are, it's not likely that their figure will match Rosenhaus' figure but that's all part of the process. Rosenhaus will fight to get Jackson as much money as he can because the more Jackson gets paid, the more Rosenhaus gets paid. I would say its almost a certainty that Rosenhaus will approach the Eagles about Jackson's contract. The interesting thing will be how the Eagles react to these talks. Another interesting thing will be Jackson's thoughts on the situation. Is he going to be willing to wait another season or will he let Rosenhaus get in his head and convince him it needs to be done now. It's a very interesting topic. I do agree that Jackson is worth much more than he's going to be paid. However, he did sign a contract so there's the argument that he should honor it. Also, he is young so his big payday will come, even if it's not this season. So, we could be in store for some real frustration this season. I'm hoping that it doesn't get too ugly between the two sides and Jackson's offseason isn't affected by it. |
Cardinals QB Kurt Warner Offically Announces His Retirement Posted: 29 Jan 2010 12:34 PM PST
Friday afternoon at a press conference in Tempe, Arizona, Warner announced his retirement from pro football. With his large family of his wife and 7 children by his side, the 38-year-old walks away with once heck of a story and a career that was filled with plenty of ups and downs. Warner leaves with a year left on a two-year, $23 million contract, and stated that he knows he still had the skills to play at the highest level, but felt that this was the right move and the right time. “There’s no question in my mind that I am doing what I am supposed to do,” Warner said. In 124 regular-season games, Warner completed 65.5 percent of his passes for 32,344 yards and 208 touchdowns. He and Fran Tarkenton are the only NFL quarterbacks to throw for 100 touchdowns and 14,000 yards for two teams. He has the top three passing performances in Super Bowl history. His 1,156 yards passing in the 2008 playoffs broke the NFL record of 1,063 he set with St. Louis in 1999. “I prayed about it, I talked to my wife about it, and I believe it’s the right time,” Warner said. “These last three years (as a member of the Cardinals), has really finished the story.” Now all that’s left is to wear a jacket on the steps of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. |
Giants QB Coach and Former Browns Head Coach Chris Palmer Retires Posted: 29 Jan 2010 10:48 AM PST Bit of a shocker here: QB coach Chris Palmer has retired, according to the Giants. Palmer is credited for helping Eli Manning become a Pro Bowl and Super Bowl winning quarterback. No word yet on his replacement. We here at NFLGridironGab wish him the best of luck in retired life.
