Soccer Match Slated to Be First Pro Event At New Meadowlands Stadium Posted: 31 Jan 2010 07:18 PM PST Mexico's soccer team will play Ecuador in a World Cup warmup on May 7 is the first professional sports event at the $1.6 billion new Meadowlands Stadium. The exhibition game in East Rutherford, N.J., is part of a six-game U.S. tour for Mexico as it prepares to face South Africa in the World Cup opener June 11 in Johannesburg. In addition, Mexico will play England at Wembley on May 24 as the English get ready for their World Cup match against the United States on June 12. The first scheduled event at the new home of the NFL's New York Giants and Jets is a college lacrosse triple-header on April 10, but only the lower bowl up to the club level will be open. The entire stadium will be open for the soccer match. Bon Jovi is scheduled to perform the first concert at the stadium on May 26. A grass surface will be installed over the FieldTurf at the Meadowlands for the Mexico-Ecuador game and corner seats will be removed to allow for the soccer field, which has a wider playing surface than the NFL. |
The Latest on the Rams Ownership Front Posted: 31 Jan 2010 07:09 PM PST Bernie Miklasz updates the Rams ownership situation today with some new nuggets and information to put together the information we have received from several other outlets. First and foremost, there are still 3 bids in play, contradicting Howard Balzer's report from this week. Bernie names Dave Checketts as the St. Louis bid's white knight, as we knew. The other interesting name that has been frequented around Rams Gab has been Gerald Ford, Texas billionaire. We speculated that Ford had one of the other bids for the Rams, but it turns out that Checketts has brought Ford into the fold in his bid as the money man. That's a fantastic move by Checketts and one that does not reek of desperation like his move to add Rush Limbaugh as the money man. However, Checketts bid is still only for 60% of the franchise and would rely on Stan Kroenke staying on as 40% owner. Bernie could not get solid information on the other two bidders, but places one in Toronto and the other possibly in Chicago. Chicago has a bunch of people capable of purchasing the Rams including: Joe Mansueto, owner of Morningstar, the Pritzker family, a Chicago hotel mogul family, Patrick Ryan who was the chair of the Chicago 2016 Olympic bid, Neil Bluhm who is the president of Midwest Gaming and Kenneth Griffen, CEO of the Citadel Investment Group. Patrick Ryan and Neil Bluhm have ties already to sports, but that does not rule out even other people that I have not listed. More importantly, would a Chicago-based owner be willing to keep the team in St. Louis? That is an unknown at this point except each bidder said they would try to keep the Rams in St. Louis as a condition of their bid. The Toronto bid would probably spell doom for the St. Louis Rams as Toronto has been borrowing the Buffalo Bills and would love their own NFL franchise. |

Colts Not Particpating In Trash-Talking Game with Saints Posted: 31 Jan 2010 05:11 PM PST
"You know this guy [Manning] has a great clock in his head. The big thing is he throws the ball so early that we are going to have to do a good job of finding ways to get to him," Gregg Williams, Saints' defensive coordinator, told radio station WGFX. "When we do get to him, we are going to make sure to have a couple of remember-me shots on him when we get there." I'd look forward to see Manning taking control of this Saints' defense. "We'll let our game speak for ourselves," Colts' tackle Charlie Johnson said. Bad move by New Orleans. Just makes the Colts more hungrier for this win. |
