Eagles ink WR Jason Avant to a 5-year deal

Jason Avant

Although the Eagles didn't make a splash in free agency over the weekend, it seems their main goal right now is bringing back the players they want that are already in their system. After signing Leonard Weaver to a new deal on Friday, the Eagles have now signed Jason Avant to a 5-year contract.

Avant typically doesn't find himself in the spotlight because of the explosive plays of DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin; however, anyone that follows this team knows it was important for the Eagles to bring him back. Avant has clutch hands and always seems to get open on third downs and in the middle of the field.

I'm glad to see that the two sides were able to reach a deal and that Jason Avant will stay with this team for a long time.

Holmgren gets his QB…Sort of.

It is being reported that the Cleveland Browns have acquired quarterback Seneca Wallace from the Seattle Seahawks. This should really be no surprise to any football fan. Wallace was drafted by current  Browns G.M. Mike Holmgren when he was the head coach for the Seahawks.

This moves means either Brady Quinn or Derek Anderson are on their way out of Cleveland. Which ever one stays will more than likely be the starter with Wallace being their backup.

The pick is said to be an undisclosed pick in the 2011 draft. The Browns currently have 11 picks in the upcoming draft.

Steelers bring back WR Antwaan Randle El

Posted: 08 Mar 2010 05:06 PM PST

The Steelers have been a lot more active that most thought they would be in free agency, as Monday they added not only safety Will Allen and WR Arnaz Battle, but they told former LB Larry Foote they want him back, and now they are bringing back WR Antwaan Randle El.

The original Steeler comes back a few days after he was released from the Washington Redskins. He played with the Steelers for four seasons before he then inked with the Washington Redskins, where he just wrapped up his 4th season before he was let go.

The Steelers are going back to the past, as first they wanted to grab former linebacker Larry Foote, who has an offer, and Antwaan Randle El informed the Steelers on Monday that he has accepted their three-year offer, according to a league source.

Randle El was a widely popular player among fans, staff and teammates during his first stint with Pittsburgh. He was released by the Redskins last week.

Randle El was a second-round draft pick of the Steelers in 2002, and he excelled as a receiver and a return man. But he might be most well known for his 43-yard touchdown pass to Hines Ward in the Steelers' Super Bowl XL victory.

Randle El left the Steelers after the Super Bowl and joined the Redskins for the 2006 season.

He right away gives the Steelers a great return guy, and can also give the team another wide out if needed. This means Limas Sweed’s 2010 roster spot could be in severe risk.

Lions taking a look at now free agent CB Lito Sheppard

Lito Sheppard

The Lions are reportedly pursuing Lito Sheppard with some competition from the Bears per ProFootballTalk.com.

Sheppard was drafted by the Eagles and had a contractual based falling out with ownership.  He was traded to the Jets in the 2009 offseason for a fifth round pick in 2009 and a conditional 2010 pick.  The 2010 pick may have been related to him being on the Jets roster since his play didn't warrant his release.

After a couple of down seasons and some early season injury issues Sheppard put together a strong performance in the second half of the season.  More impressive was the fact that he was being targeted more frequently as teams shied away from teammate Darrelle Revis.

Sheppard has struggled with injuries and is not a long term solution, but the Lions need to add more bodies to the cornerback position to avoid handicapping themselves in the draft.

Colts release starting right guard Ryan Lilja

Posted: 08 Mar 2010 02:54 PM PST

Right guard Ryan Lilja has been shown the door by the Colts, as PFT announces he has been released by the team today. He was on the O-line that team president Bill Polian said didn’t play very well in the teams recent Super Bowl setback to the Saints:

Colts center Jeff Saturday disagreed with President Bill Polian’s suggestion that the team’s offensive line struggled in the Super Bowl.

But Polian is the one that makes personnel decisions, and he spoke loud and clear by releasing starting guard Ryan Lilja Monday, according to Alex Marvez of Fox.

Lilja was due a $1.73 million bonus soon, but the move is still surprising. He started every game for the Colts last season and is only 28 years old.

Ultimately, the Colts need better run blockers and Polian decided Lilja was only going to get in the way with a hefty base salary. Polian trusts the team’s ability to develop players and he’s usually right.

That trust allows Polian to make strong statements in print and on the transaction wire.

Steelers QB Roethlisberger hires big name defense attorney

It looks like Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is going on the offensive in his latest sexual abuse claim by a 20-year-old. The QB is hiring a big time defense lawyer in Georgia to fight the latest claim of abuse that was handed to him on Thursday:

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has hired prominent Atlanta criminal defense lawyer Edward T.M. Garland, the attorney who defended Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens against murder charges in 2000.

“I can confirm to you that I have been retained,” Garland told the Tribune-Review this morning before he called the Milledgeville Police Department.

Garland said Roethlisberger hasn’t been charged with a crime in connection with an accusation by a 20-year-old Milledgeville student who told police the quarterback sexually assaulted her in a dingy room of a popular nightclub early Friday morning.

Representing Lewis, Garland skillfully navigated past initial homicide charges linked to a street fistfight in the Buckhead section of Atlanta after the Super Bowl. His client agreed to help the prosecution and pleaded to obstructing justice before serving a year of probation.

Roethlisberger is believed to have departed Georgia shortly after the sorority woman alleged he attacked her near the VIP room of the Capital City tavern, a popular dance club in downtown Milledgeville.

Rams to sign former Giants DT Fred Robbins

Posted: 08 Mar 2010 08:53 AM PST

The Rams added former Giant DT Fred Robbins to their rotation of defensive tackles over the weekend.  Our own Mike predicted the Rams would sign Robbins in his defensive line preview here.

Is Robbins the answer to the Rams issues along the defensive line?  Certainly not.  Is he going to make the Rams wary of drafting a defensive tackle high in the draft?  Probably not.  However, he is going to add to the Rams current defensive tackle rotation of Robbins, Adam Carriker, Clifton Ryan and Darell Scott.  Robbins, 33, will add the much needed veteran presence to the middle of the defensive line that Hollis Thomas could not bring last season.

Jaguars ink former Packers DE Kampman

Posted: 08 Mar 2010 07:45 AM PST

The Jaguars Sunday made their first real big inking of free agency, as they signed former Packers DE Aaron Kampman. the 30-year-old comes to a team that sorely needs help in getting to the passer. The Jaguars finished with a franchise-low 14 sacks in 2009, the fifth-lowest total in NFL history.

Kampman he is coming off a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and played in just nine games in 2009. He had 3.5 sacks. Overall he has has 54 sacks, and emerged as one of the NFL's elite pass rushers in recent years, recording a total of 37 sacks from 2006-08, but struggled in 2009.

Jacksonville, which also elevated its special teams with the signing of Kassim Osgood this weekend, targeted Kampman before free agency began Friday.
