Report has the Lions with interest in guard Rob Sims Posted: 31 Mar 2010 03:24 PM PDT Jason La Canfora of NFL.com reports that:
Once the Lions expressed interest in restricted free agent Anthony Hargrove, I was a little surprised that they hadn't inquired about Rob Sims. Sims is one of the best young guards in the game and he is tendered at a 4th round pick. The deadline for signing a restricted free agent to an offer sheet is April 15th, and the Lions' decisions between now and then will provide great insight into their designs for the 2nd pick in the draft. If the Lions sign Hargrove and surrender a third round pick, they would most likely not draft Suh or McCoy with the 2nd pick. If they sign Sims and cough up a 4th rounder, they almost certainly won't draft a left tackle like Russell Okung or Trent Williams. Don't rule out the possibility that the Lions are expressing interest in either player as a smokescreen. Mayhew loves keeping people guessing what their plans are, what better way than this? |
What’s the deal with the Rams ownership? Posted: 31 Mar 2010 03:18 PM PDT A few national reports, including one each from the two-headed ESPN reporting monster of Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen make it seem like the Rams have NOT in fact found a new owner. And that also means that the limbo that the Rams were subject to over the past year and a half could continue for a longer, undetermined length of time. This would be terrible for the Rams and their fans who were happy to finally have closure with a St. Louis-friendly owner. But, the place where I am confused is, Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has repeatedly busted the two growing concerns. The first concern is the Khan's dispute with the IRS and the amount of debt that Khan would have to borrow against his company, Flex-o-Gate. Here's Bernie from February 15th, 2010:
Here's Bernie again, on the debt situation March 1st, 2010:
The Rams and the Rosenbloom family retained Goldman Sachs to vet any potential owners (so that goofballs like me couldn't just bid one dollar). Goldman Sachs should know what would set off red flags for the NFL and Khan passed all their tests. So, when ESPN's Adam Schefter says on St. Louis radio that he would be "shocked" if Shahid Khan is approved by the NFL as the next St. Louis Rams owner, pardon me if I'm a little bit confused about why. |
Bengals coach Marvin Lewis and DC Mike Zimmer attend South Florida’s Pro Day Posted: 31 Mar 2010 02:30 PM PDT Reports have come in from various sources that Head Coach Marvin Lewis and Defensive Coordinator Mike Zimmer were on hand for the University of South Florida's pro day today. Lewis and Zimmer were likely there to get an up close and personal look at DE Jason Pierre-Paul, who is one of the top defensive ends in the draft. Pierre-Paul is expected to go in the first round, and could be available at number 21 when the Bengals are up. Other players of potential interest to the stripes include DE George Selvie, S Nate Allen, CB Jerome Murphy, and WR Carlton Mitchell. Mitchell had a particularly impressing workout, running a 4.40 40-yard dash and looking fluid and smooth in drills. With DE Robert Geathers coming off a down year, and the other starting, DE Antwan Odom, coming off a ruptured achilles tendon, the team may be looking for more help with the pass rush. Other DE's currently on the roster include Frostee Rucker, last year's 3rd round pick, Michael Johnson, and Odom's replacement last year, Jonathan Fanene. The visit from Lewis and Zimmer indicates the team may go defense in round one, which up until recently seemed unlikely. |
A vote for Bill Parcells to stick around in Miami – at least for awhile Posted: 31 Mar 2010 11:52 AM PDT Many have wondered whether Bill Parcells will leave the Dolphins for yet another project, or just, retirement. Whether it is this season, or next season, or the season after that, Parcells will be leaving the Fins at some point in the next couple of years. But what some people do not get, and these are the people that start up senseless rumors, is that Parcells still has a job to oversee. The Tuna is not someone to just abandon a job halfway through. No, he sticks to the plan, and only leaves a team, after he feels he can do no more from his position for the team. And it just so happens that the Fins are a couple years away from being a complete mission for the Big Tuna. Yes, the Dolphins have a young, solid nucleus to build upon, and this is what will guide both Tony Sparano and Co. through the first couple of years without Parcells. The Trifecta is finally starting to implement some veterans into their equation, and are now just waiting to capitalize off of the next couple of drafts and free agency periods, to complete their team, and propel themselves into a perennial Super Bowl contending team. But the thing that many people fail to recognize is that the Dolphins do not have all the players that they want quite yet. This is why the Dolphins brass is trying to trade guard Justin Smiley, because he proved to not be able to overcome his injuries enough to show the Fins staff that he can be a durable player for them.
But the Dolphins also have multiple other holes to fill as well, most on defense, but soon, the voids on offense will be noticeable as well. As of today, the Fins are looking to add a starter capable safety, a few outside linebackers, a #1 wide receiver, a tight end that can stretch the field, a dynamic running back, and some more depth on the offensive line. I hope that sounds like a lot of holes, because it is. The front office has done the hard part of rebuilding this franchise. They have brought in all of the necessary personnel to man the front office and coaching staff positions. Now they have to put the finishing touches on a roster, that with the proper fine tuning, can turn into something special. Yes, I said something special. We all know it, but have been secondguessing ourselves just enough to keep it away in our Dolphins closet. This team has some potential. Think of our front seven after two years, when the finishing touches will be put on that. The idea of that not only has us the fans salivating at it, but also the Trifecta as well, especially Parcells, who specializes in snatching up linebackers on draft day, and transforming these young boys, into freaks of nature. If you don't believe me, just take Lawrence Taylor, and DeMarcus Ware for examples. The fact that the facet of Parcells game, the front seven, and the trenches, are not complete is enough in itself to convince me that the Tuna will stay on with the Dolphins until his job is complete. His job may be almost complete, but not nearly complete enough for Parcells to rocket out of Miami as quickly as he came in. So let the rumors come. But just remember, they do not mean anything unless Parcells does in fact leave the Fins for some other life pursuit. But that day will not be here for at least two more years. It's still raining Tuna in Miami! |
Giants get high marks on their drafting skills Posted: 31 Mar 2010 11:50 AM PDT I know — this is a bit of fluff – but let's face it there isn't all that much going on right now and we're all waiting anxiously for the draft to see who the Giants fortify their positions with. Speaking of which, here's the point of the post… Bleacher Report has the Giants ranked almost at the top of their NFL draft success stories today — #4 to be exact. [via]
As followers of the team, we all feel like the Giants are an elite drafting machine — and even though 2008 and 09 were seasons that ended in bitter disappointment, we all recognize the talent level of the team that has been built through the draft. Manning, Jacobs, Bradshaw, Snee, Diehl, Boss, Smith, Manningham, Nicks, Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, Alford, Webster, Thomas, Ross, Phillips…. the list of current and future great players go on and on. And who knows what will become of Ramses Barden, Andre Brown, or even with the draft picks this year. One thing's for sure, all eyes are on 2010 for this young Giants team. |
The Brutal Truth On Redskins Draft Tendencies Posted: 31 Mar 2010 11:31 AM PDT As if we needed another indicator of the bad decisions made by the Redskins organization during the draft, The Bleacher Report has us covered. In today's case studies on the best and worst drafting organization in the NFL, the Redskins are bringing up the rear at #30 out of 32. Only the Raiders and Rams are worse according to the report – which is horrible company to be associated with these days. [via]
Of course the offensive line goes without saying, and Jason Campbell still somehow fits in the "Jury's Out" section of pubic opinion. It's like the ultimate chicken or egg scenario there between the line and QB, and so let's just leave it alone for now. On a bright note — Brian Orakpo is going to be a star and the report casually leaves him out of the mix. Also for the record, Malcom Kelly could very well be a starting threat for the Redskins is the ball was thrown in his direction more instead of the tight end. Speaking of which – Chris Cooley? HELLO!?!? |
Latest Donovan McNabb rumor has him possibly landing in Arizona Posted: 31 Mar 2010 06:57 AM PDT
Cole goes on to explain that one player that could have a lot to say about the QB spot is start wide out Larry Fitzgerald, whose contract will be up after the 2011 season:
