Seattle Wants to Trade Down from #14?

Posted: 22 Apr 2010 05:14 AM PDT

According to Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times, the Seahawks would like to trade down from their 14th overall selection in tonight’s N.F.L. Draft.

The news came out of a mock draft the beat writer did for his newspaper:

14. Seattle Seahawks

C.J. Spiller, RB Clemson | 5-11 | 196

Some think Spiller will be chosen in the top 10, others think Ryan Mathews will be first running back chosen. Seattle wants to trade down, but what if Spiller is there?

If Seattle does trade back, the team could still possibly pick up every-down-back Ryan Mathews before a team like Houston does at pick number 20.  Or the team could skip running back in the early rounds or altogether and stick with what it already has in Julius Jones and Justin Forsett.  Yet another idea is that Seattle could be eyeing up a running back in next year’s Draft, one like Alabama’s Mark Ingram.

Make sure to check back here at NFLGridironGab.com and over at SeahawksGab.com throughout the day leading up to the Draft and routinely during the event as I’ll bring you the latest news and analysis on Seattle’s selections and potential moves.

Jets ready to move Vernon Gholston to the D-Line?

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 07:53 PM PDT

Rich Cimini, now of ESPNNewYork, reports that the Jets have been using Vernon Gholston exclusively at defensive end during offseason workouts.

After mulling the move for weeks, the Jets are leaning heavily toward making Gholston a full-time defensive end.

The former first-round pick has been working out with the defensive linemen for weeks, sources said, and now the Taylor signing all but clinches it. The team will wait to see how things shake out in the draft before making it permanent.

The former sixth overall pick has yet to record a sack in his two seasons and is well on his way to being one of the biggest busts of all time.

At only 264 pounds, Gholston will need to severely bulk up in order for the transition to be successful.

With the lack of promise he's shown so far I'm not crossing my fingers.

Debate continues around the Eagles first draft pick

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 07:52 PM PDT

Maurkice Pouncey

Even with the Eagles schedule being released yesterday, the majority of the talk you hear about the team right now is draft related. Although the offseason was filled with cries of defense, defense, defense, there are still debates on whether or not that is going to be where the Eagles will spend their first pick (wherever that may be).

Although I am convinced the Eagles will use their first selection on a defensive back, there are many who believe the Eagles need to find a top-notch interior lineman. The only reason this is even being discussed is due to the injury that Jamaal Jackson sustained towards the end of the season last year. It's unlikely that he'll be ready for the season opener, so the big question is who will fill that spot. Right now, Nick Cole is the starter but there will definitely be a competition at Training Camp this year. Mike McGlynn is the primary threat to overtake Cole while others will compete for the spot as well.

There is only one clear cut first round center in this class and that's Maurkice Pouncey out of Florida. He's more of a mid to late first rounder so the Eagles might have a crack at him if they were to stay with the 24th overall selection. However, if they trade up for someone else and don't pick again until 37th I don't think he'll be around anymore. According to PFT's list of players who visited the Eagles, Pouncey did not visit. This list is "unofficial" but I'm not sure how his visit would go unheard.

Just because he may not have visited doesn't mean the Eagles aren't interested. Center is definitely a big need for them and I'm sure they will draft one. However, center's are not typically drafted high so I think they could pick up a fairly solid player in the second or third round.

Do you think the Eagles should try to get Maurkice Pouncey?

Pete Carroll Tweeting Seattle’s Blueprint for the 2010 N.F.L. Draft

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 05:11 PM PDT

Call him the savior, the lame duck, the newest head coach, but whatever you do, don’t call Pete Carroll uninteresting.

Throughout the day today Carroll has been reaching out to Seahawks fans and the media via his Twitter with hints regarding what his team will do starting Thursday in the N.F.L. Draft.  His hints have been songs from famous artists and groups.

So far here’s what he’s posted:

So Seahawks fans, who is Seattle drafting with its nine picks during the 2010 N.F.L. Draft?

I’ll do my best to routinely update this post and its copy on SeahawksGab.com as soon as I find out that Carroll has Tweeted something new regarding his hints.

Could Rams Trade Down from #1? Teams are Calling in…

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 04:50 PM PDT

From the Twitterof ESPN’s Rachel Nichols, 10 teams reached out to the St. Louis Rams today regarding the first overall selection in Thursday’s first round of the N.F.L. Draft; however, she also reports none of the 10 inquiring teams were interested enough yet to go into specifics of a deal with St. Louis.

For on-going Draft news and analysis, make sure to check back here on NFLGridironGab.com and at your favorite team’s Gab page.

(For those Seahawks fans out there, I’ll be providing in-depth reports and analysis as soon as I get info during leading up to and during the draft both here at NFLGridironGab.com and also at SeahawksGab.com.)

Schefter: Steelers have Contacted Seahawks about Roethlisberger

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 04:22 PM PDT

Per the Twitter of ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Seattle has now been drug into the Ben Roethlisberger trade rumor frenzy.

According to the analyst, the Steelers have called the Seahawks, among other teams, regarding a deal that would send Pittsburgh’s two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback to a team with a top-10 selection in Thursday’s first round of the N.F.L. Draft.

If Seattle pulls the trigger on such a deal, I’ll officially stop being a journalist and I’ll instead take up a profession in musical theater.

Jacksonville sends DE Quentin Groves to the Raiders

Posted: 21 Apr 2010 01:54 PM PDT

With the draft just a day away, a deal was made today involving the Raiders – but it wasn’t for Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. Instead, the Raiders have gotten Jags DE Quentin Groves, as the player himself put on his twitter that he has been moved to the Raiders.

Jaguars defensive end Quentin Groves left the following message Wednesday afternoon: “Duval County…. I LOVE U GUYS…thanks for all your support…New Starts=New Beginnings…OAKLAND HERE I COME!!!!”

Groves also changed his avatar to the Raiders insignia. No one from either team has confirmed Groves’ news, but the account has been verified previously as Groves’ account.

The DE was drafted in 21st spot of the second round (52nd overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Jaguars. The Jaguars traded with Tampa Bay to move up six spots in order to select Groves.
