Lawrence Taylor – Gifted But Troubled Posted: 07 May 2010 08:04 PM PDT Lawrence Taylor, a member of the Hall of Fame and probably the greatest linebacker ever to play, was as we all know, accused of rape on Thursday. This is hardly the first time that Taylor has been arrested/dealt with off-the-field issues. Here is a brief record of Lawrence Taylor's arrests, suspensions and other troubles. Feb. 14, 1986: Enters six-week drug-rehab program in Houston, leaves a week later. March 20, 1986: Admits in public statement that he has received help for substance abuse. Aug. 29, 1988: Given 30-day four-game suspension for second violation of NFL's drug-abuse policy for cocaine use. March 1989: Fails breath test when police find him asleep behind the wheel of his Jeep beside the Garden State Parkway in N.J. May 10, 1989: Acquitted in Saddlebrook, N.J., of drunken driving charges Sept. 20, 1995: Tries to choke a reporter after a Giants practice. April 16, 1996: Driver's license suspended for outstanding parking tickets in Newark, N.J. May 3, 1996: One of 15 arrested in Myrtle Beach, S.C., for allegedly trying to buy $100 worth of crack from undercover police while in town for a celebrity golf tourney. Charges dropped when LT agrees to 60 hours of public service. June 4, 1997: Pleaded guilty to filing false 1990 income-tax return and failing to report $48,000 income from the now-defunct LT Sports Club in East Rutherford, N.J. May 13, 1998: Arrested in his New Jersey home in a roundup of deadbeat parents. Released after about 10 hours in jail when a friend pays $6,000 in child support and for an outstanding traffic violation. Oct. 19, 1998: Arrested again, this time in Florida, for allegedly buying $50 in crack from an undercover cop and for possessing drug paraphernalia. Nov. 2009: Arrested in Miami for leaving the scene of an accident. May 6, 2010: Arrested and accused of raping a teenage girl at a hotel in Suffern, N.Y. Thanks to NYdailynews for the list of troubles. |
Bears GM Jerry Angelo speaks…and we offer a no-BS translation Posted: 07 May 2010 07:34 PM PDT Bears GM Jerry Angelo sat down with chicagobears.com to address some of the latest happenings from a very busy couple of last weeks. Here's a look at what he said…and more importantly, a translation as to what he really meant. Jerry on…Chris Harris's return to Chicago: "Bringing in a veteran like Chris Harris obviously bodes well for the secondary. Again, we weren't just fixated on safety. We like Craig Steltz, Danieal Manning, Josh Bullocks and Al Afalava." Translation: "At this point, I settled for bringing Chris Harris back because I felt his average defensive play would be an upgrade over what's currently on the roster. I'll admit it – I have absolutely zero percent confidence in What's His Name, That White Dude and That Other Guy." Jerry on…Major Wright starting as a rookie: "It has yet to be determined how fast he picks things up and the comfort level that he has with the system and the coaches have with him. We saw it with Al Afalava last year. The coaches got into a real comfort level with Al. It has been done. We saw it here with Danieal Manning his rookie year…" Translation: "He damn well better! If Afalava and Manning (who played at a Division II school in college) can start for us as rookies, I would sure as hell hope a three-year starter at an SEC and national powerhouse would have the position locked up by Day 1 of training camp." Jerry on…Signing a veteran QB to backup Cutler: "We're still exploring that. Last year we went with Caleb [Hanie] as the backup and Brett [Basanez] on the practice squad. So we're at least where we were last year." Translation: "You bet your ass we will. We were lucky as hell Cutler didn't get carted off the field behind last year's mostly porous line. We'll sign a veteran, keep Hanie as our third stringer and throw Dan LeFevour on the practice squad." Jerry on…Jerry's role changing with the hiring of Tim Ruskell as Director of Player Personnel: "It will. It's going to change. Tim's going to have more latitude to do things. Having worked with Tim helps because we share a commonality in philosophy that will expedite the feeling-out process that you normally go through when you hire people in management positions. We'll be able to share ideas and create a relationship needed to lead and grow our organization." Translation: "We're going to share a lot of things, including blame for all of my questionable player personnel decisions." |
Five minicamp questions for the Eagles Posted: 07 May 2010 05:12 PM PDT Number One – FS Number Two – CB Number Three – DE Number Four – The LB's Number Five – OL I didn't mention Kolb because the only real question there is, Is he ready? The coaches think so, so we'll see. I believe there will be some bumps in the road, but he will show everyone what he learned watching McNabb. A lot is riding on his shoulders, and he must come through…..or the Linc will start chants of "We want Vick!" |

Former Raiders QB Russell clears waivers Posted: 07 May 2010 04:23 PM PDT ESPN reports that former Raiders QB JaMarcus Russell is free to any team, as he was not claimed by any team on Friday, making him a free agent able to sign anywhere.

Vikings miss on adding another wide out Posted: 07 May 2010 09:27 AM PDT Is a wide receiver group consisting of Sidney Rice, Bernard Berrian, Percy Harvin, Greg Lewis, Jaymar Johnson, Joe Webb, Taye Biddle, Tindal Kelton, Aaron Rhea and Ray Small good enough? Apparently not. The Vikings reportedly made a waiver claim on receiver Marko Mitchell after the Redskins released him on Tuesday. Mitchell ended up going to Detroit, as they also made a claim and have the "power" of being first in line to make claims because of their poor 2009 record. As a seventh round pick for the 'Skins, Mitchell had a solid preseason but ended up only catching four passes for 32 yards during the regular season (played in 10 games). While it didn't work out, it is interesting to see that the Vikings would consider adding more depth to a team that already has 10 wide outs on the roster. |

Russell may very well go down as the biggest draft bust in NFL history, rivaling that of former Chargers QB Ryan Leaf. In three seasons he put up 7 wins, and the team paid him $39 million for those seven wins. I am sure that when Al Davis and the team drafted him, never did they think Russell would make $5.5 million per win. He got off to an awful start by missing his entire first training camp, then when he finally did roll in, he was fat. He never took the role as leader seriously, and commonly would sleep in meetings and spend way too much time at the buffets, sometimes getting close to 300 pounds according to reports. Since the start of the common draft in 1967, only one other No. 1 pick was released this quickly in his NFL career. Indianapolis cut 1992 top pick Steve Emtman after three seasons, but that was more because of injuries than production. Emtman did play three more seasons with the Dolphins and Redskins. I would shock me to say the least to think Russell is going to have three more years in this game. Lane Kiffin didn’t want him, and it seemed Tom Cable did whatever he could to not have to play him either. That should say a lot when coaches are not willing to hand the ball to a player that the owner has shoved down their throats. Finally on Thursday Davis saw the light, this after Russell came to mini-camp last week, had one good practice, then went back to his old ways. I wouldn’t doubt a team takes a shot on Russell, but based on his short track record in the NFL, there’s no doubt that it would be a shock to see him associated with many on field success for however long the rest of his career spans. |

Ravens safety Reed Undergoes “Procedure’ on Hip Posted: 07 May 2010 06:40 AM PDT Some interesting news broke yesterday as reported by the Baltimore Sun in regards to Ed Reed's return for the 2010 season.
It isn't often that a surgery or procedure is considered good news but in this case it means Reed is preparing to play this season. There has been a ton of speculation surrounding Reed's status for next year and I think that this is at least a sign that he plans to be out there and to be as physically healthy as he can be to give it his best effort. |
