Thoughts On Today’s NFL Owners Meeting Posted: 25 May 2010 05:05 AM PDT The owners of all 32 NFL teams will reconvene in Dallas Tuesday for another round of owner meetings. On the schedule are at least one, possibly two major votes, on some pretty big issues. Let's take a closer look at both issues… First, the owners must decide which city will host the 2014 Super Bowl. Whispers around the league suggest that a New York/New Jersey game is almost a certainty. Miami and Tampa are also players in the game, but they are not going down without a fight. I'm not a big fan of a New York Super Bowl to begin with. Of course, you got the possibility of cold and snowy weather. If you're a fan from a Southern city, like New Orleans, you're not particularly fond of cold weather to begin with. So, braving five hours in the cold to watch the game would be a little difficult. Not to mention all the Super Bowl related fan activities, like outdoor concerts and the NFL Experience, could be affected as well. In the two cities I've been in for Super Bowl week, I enjoyed walking around the city, meeting fans, attending outdoor concerts, and getting a chance to explore the city. I don't think I'd be as excited to go if the Saints played in the Super Bowl. I would still go though. How could you not? Logistics could be a problem as well. While another cold weather city, Indianapolis, is hosting the 2012 Super Bowl, it is not spread out as New York. Where would your teams stay? New York, then have to drive to the Meadowlands? New Jersey and have to drive to New York for Super Bowl related activities? While it would make sense for the media to stay in New York, it would still be a lot of driving and traffic. Would you want to deal with that as a fan as well? Don't get me wrong..I'm a big fan of New York. I like the city. I have friends there. I just don't think I'd want to go to a Super Bowl in New York. It would be one big headache as a fan. I don't think I would enjoy it as much as Super Bowls past.
A vote for a New York could also start another precedent. Owners like Daniel Snyder in DC and Pat Bowlen in Denver have expressed interest in hosting cold weather Super Bowls in the past. You can bet other owners like Philadelphia's Jeff Lurie and New England's Bob Kraft would also love the possibility of hosting a Super Bowl. A vote for New York would open the door for other cold weather cities to host the Big Game. We could be seeing more Super Bowls up north in the next ten years if New York wins this battle. There's even talk of London hosting a Super Bowl. A vote for New York could also open the door for that as well. Owners can do as they please with America's Game. I understand making the NFL a global commodity, but having a Super Bowl in London would be an outrage. I'm sure Europe would be up in arms if the UEFA Champions League final were played in the US. Second, they owners may also vote on whether or not to implement the new overtime rules during the regular season. While this may seem a no-brainer, there are issues beyond the obvious which my affect whether the issue goes on the ballot. As you may remember, I don't like the new overtime rules to begin with. But, if there are going to be new rules, implement them for all games. Please. I don't want to watch a playoff games where both teams don't know what to do or how to react in overtime. Awkward. The coaches are now aboard with the owners on the new overtime rules. However, the players are still not all keen on the new overtime rules. Some owners are hesitant to vote for the new rules due to the upcoming collective bargaining agreement negotiations coming up. They feel voting for the measure would hinder negotiations with the players. I'm not too sure about that arguement. Just get it over with and approve the measure, for the sake of us fans please. Don't forget about us. |
Laylah’s Take: Go Ahead Ochocinco – Live it up Posted: 24 May 2010 11:05 PM PDT
Well, how many woman does it take to make Ochocinco happy? Will 85 be his lucky love number too? Mr. Ochocinco stakes out another quest but this time it’s to find love. All eyes will be glued to witness 85, yes, 85 woman compete, Ok, let’s be honest here, fight, spit and slap their way to the AFC North Champs best wide receivers heart. Ochocinco and VH1 are teaming up as his new reality show premiers in July. Now for the most important part, football, remember that? Its a bigger game mentally than physically some will say. So will Ochocinco be drained before his 2010 season even starts? There’s a lot of love in the air, too many and too much just may be too distracting. Its hard enough to have a relationship with one woman pre, during, and maybe even the post season. Some people can juggle many things while others can be watched crumbling. We will see by the time football season comes around. Everyone will speculate that all these extracurricular activities will be to blame for his career, I mean, when his football skills come fumbling down. Are the coaches stepping in? Should they have prior commitment contracts not to be exhausted and distracted before the season starts? I am all for everyone to take advantage of everything life has to offer but when do you say time out? Should that time be now, before practices begin? Or should he continue to ride the wave? What’s the worst that can happen? He falls in love, lives happily ever after and continues to play great ball? If we are only able to do one thing in life, there would be no life, we would be monotone and robotic due to boredom. So I say, live it up Ochocinco, so many others would take the chance as well. Ride the wave as long as you are able. Just don’t forget to get off gracefully, you know there will be others just waiting for you to fall. |

Madden ‘11 and The Bears – Gaming Around the League Posted: 24 May 2010 09:27 PM PDT Graham Bennett grew up with a controller in his hand, having spent most of his youth playing Combat, Super Mario and even spending two years of his high school career in the fantasy world of EverQuest. Thankfully in college he found sports gaming and as they say, the rest is history. In a series preceding the August release of Madden 11, he’ll be venturing around the league, analyzing each team’s off seasons and how it will affect that team’s overall abilities in Madden 11. Today, he’ll be taking a look at the Chicago Bears. Graham Bennett grew up with a controller in his hand, having spent most of his youth playing Combat, Super Mario and even spending two years of his high school career in the fantasy world of EverQuest. We all know the Bears are a team with a rich tradition for hard-nosed running attacks and brutal defense. It would look as though Lovie Smith and the rest of the Bears front office would like to continue this tradition with a small draft class that favors the defense as well as a couple of big bruising free agents. The Bear’s first draft pick, Major Wright will likely have a high awareness rating for a rookie (mid-high 70s) and his overall will probably put him into contention with the current starters and add some much needed depth to the position. The remainder of the Bear’s draft picks will likely have overall Madden ratings in the 60s by virtue of being selected late in the draft. Note that this overall rating is only in effect before the NFL season kicks off because EA will provide roster updates throughout the year to keep up with the real team. If Joshua Moore or J’Marcus Webb end up stepping up into a starting roll and really lighting up the league, their stats will increase to compensate as long as you can go online and download the updates. What should really make Bears fans happy about this off season is their moves in free agency. The addition of Chester Taylor will help back up Matt Forte, especially in Franchise Mode where your injuries last longer than the game you’re playing, and adding Julius Peppers whose Madden 10 rating at the end of the year was 93, creates all kinds of options for defensive schemes to employ. With Peppers on one end and Adewale Ogunleye on the other, you might want to consider changing your default playbook to include a mix of 4-3 and 3-4 schemes. Given the Bears’ depth at linebacker, being able to switch between these different looks could give you an edge on an online opponent who isn’t the best at his pre-snap reads. On the offensive side, Matte Forte is still probably going to be your bread and butter and in the passing game you’ll be going to Greg Olsen and Devin Hester more than anyone else the management didn’t bolster the receiving corp much this off season. At QB, Dan LeFevour is probably going to be in the 60s at the beginning of the season and only increase if he sees playing time and takes advantage of it. Thankfully, Jay Cutler is a skilled athlete who is going to be in the low 80s consistently, regardless of real-life play due to his strong arm and natural athletic abilities. In Madden 11, the Bears’ overall will likely go from 75 to 80-85 and you can expect to win a number of Super Bowls in your franchise mode without having to turn the difficulty down to Pro. |
Colts to move Tony Ugoh to Left Guard Posted: 24 May 2010 05:34 PM PDT According to Indianapolis Star's Mike Chappell, the Indianapolis Colts will move offensive lineman Tony Ugoh to left guard. Ugoh was originally playing left tackle, protecting Peyton Manning's blind side. Ugoh has fulfilled the position really and will be moved. "I told 'em wherever they needed me," Ugoh said. "My big thing this year is I want to play. I don't care where it's at." The Colts already released guard Ryan Lilja, and Ugoh will replace him there. Mike Pollack may win the right guard position like he did last season. If he does, Ugoh and Pollack will compete. "This is my first go at guard," he said. "But it's just one step over. I'll be all right." |

Highlights from the Bears first off-season minicamp Posted: 24 May 2010 05:14 PM PDT It's hard to get overly excited about dudes practicing football in shorts in May, but the Bears first offseason mini-camp offered a lot for Bears fans to digest. Here's a look at some of the highlights: Julius Peppers lined up at both defensive end spots and scared the Bears tackles into a couple of false starts. Brian Urlacher returned to the football field for the first time since breaking his wrist in last year's season opener. No. 54 intercepted a Cutler pass in 7-on-7 drills Friday morning. Take that, Gale Sayers. After struggling to coax quotes out of Lovie Smith's mouth for 6 years, the poor Chicago media finally has a headline-generating personality in Mike Martz. It's only May, but Martz is already dishing out some zingers:
Injured folks not participating included Olin Kreutz, Brandon Manumaleuna and Brad Maynard. Not surprisingly, Tommie Harris was held out of several practices for precautionary reasons. As of May, it appears the Bears starting WRs – when they go with a traditional two-WR formation – will be Hester (Z or flanker) and Johnny Knox (X receiver). And Martz doesn't want them learning other positions. "Our two starters don't learn anything else but what they have. We want them to be as good as they can." Cornerback Zack Bowman had 3 INTs over the 3-day practices. The Bears wore 99 decals on the back of their helmets to honor Gaines Adams, who passed away in January due to cardiac arrest. Marcus Harrison switched his jersey to #99 in honor of Adams, who he had become friends with when Adams joined the Bears. Charles Tillman opened practices with the 2nd defensive unit, likely because Lovie was trying to send him a message for missing some 'voluntary' activities leading up to this weekend. Not surprisingly, Peanut was back with the starters later that day, where he was paired with Bowman. |
Giants Monday thoughts and musings Posted: 24 May 2010 05:09 PM PDT Here they are, Monday Thoughts and Musings, brought to you by the salad with a little bit of tuna I'm eating. It's quite good. Although I ran out of dressing, so now it's just lettuce. I'm not a good dressing distributor. But, I digress -I'm glad that at least a little football is starting. OTA's don't really give you much, but it's something. We're in that post-draft lull right now, and we're starving for anything football. OTA's are a good start -I'm hoping that Mario Manningham can make the jump to the next level. He has all the talent. He's just now always there mentally. He'll drop balls, go out of bounds. If he can get his head in the right place on game day, the Giants offense will be that much better. -Provided he stays healthy, Justin Tuck will have 10+ sacks this year. His shoulder is fine, he won't have to face Flozell Adams and I think the supporting cast around him is better, meaning Tuck won't be double teamed. -It's been a while since the McNabb trade, and I still don't get it from the perspective of the Eagles. Maybe Kevin Kolb is the real deal. But McNabb still has life in him. It's a huge risk, especially because Kolb is so unknown. -Baseball interlude: Went to Citi Field for the first time on Saturday. Sadly, my Yanks lost. But, the Stadium was interesting. It reminded me of Houston's Minute Maid Park. Almost identical. Sightlines, for the most part, were good. There was this place in center field called "Taste of the City", which had Blue Smoke and Shake Shack. The lines were ridiculous. I didn't even wait on line. There was also an international food stand, where they had sushi, Chinese food, Korean Food. I love sushi, but I can't eat it at a baseball game. It's just weird. This new emphasis on gourmet food at stadiums just feels wrong. I want a hot dog, not barbecue ribs. More and more, baseball games are becoming less about baseball, and more about the Stadium. I will say that the Mets museum was pretty cool. And I'm not even a Mets fan. For the record, the best stadium I've been to is Miller Park in Milwaukee. -I have a strange feeling that we'll be hearing a lot of "Romo back to throw, finds Bryant deep down the field." Dez is going to be a star. Romo is going to benefit from it. -Jon Goff will be the starting middle linebacker Week 1. Will he stay there the whole year? That remains to be seen. But the Giants are giving Goff every chance to be the starter. I think he'll capitalize. He's really smart and instinctive. Has the physical tools. Just has to put it all together. -Seriously, can the Giants stay healthy this year? Is it really too much to ask? Is it? -Travel interlude: I'm debating, if the Flyers get to the Stanley Cup, buying a ticket and seeing a game in Philly. It's going to be expensive. But, I think the atmosphere will be worth it. Have never seen a Stanley Cup game. It's on my bucket list. What do you think? -The Kevin Boss injury, while it won't cost him playing time, will probably benefit from Travis Beckum. He'll get the reps. He reminds me a lot of Chris Cooley/Dustin Keller. Field stretcher. -If Domenik Hixon can stay healthy, can he be the number one receiver we all thought? Were we wrong to think that in the first place? -It's looking more and more like the Giants and Jets will host the 2014 Super Bowl. It will be crazy in the city, but it's about time we got a Super Bowl. Biggest city in the world. And who cares about the weather? Football was meant to be played in the cold. If it snows, it will be amazing. -I'm thinking that Hakeem Nicks and Steve Smith will have 1,000 yards+ receiving next year. That would be awesome -Food interlude: I'm looking for a better breakfast. I usually grab a bagel as I run out the door, but I'm sick of it. I need something quick, easy and healthy. Thoughts? |
