Cowboys Williams says Time In Dallas “a nightmare”

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 09:02 PM PDT

There is no doubt that there is a lot of pressure on Dallas Cowboys receiver Roy Williams.  Fans and media tend to put a lot of pressure on a guy that costs a team a first and third round selection in a draft.

Since he arrived in Dallas, Williams was supposed to be the number one guy.  At first, he was supposed to partner with Terrell Owens to form the most prolific receiver combination in the league.  That idea failed when Williams only caught 19 balls and only 1 touchdown in the seven games he played in 2008.  He rebounded a little bit in 2009 when he grabbed 38 balls and 7 touchdowns.

This April the Cowboys used their number one pick on receiver Dez Bryant.  Since that pick was made there has been a lot of talk around the Cowboys camp about the position.  Will the Cowboys use Bryant to push Williams?  Will they cut Crayton? What about the young guys?

While most of the attention has been on Patrick Crayton for skipping the voluntary OTA's so far this spring, some questions have come Williams' way.  This last week he responded.  This trip to Dallas, returning to the state of Texas, was supposed to be a dream come true for the former Texas Longhorns' star.  Instead Williams' word to describe it was "nightmare".

"It's been a nightmare," the native of Odessa, Texas, told Yahoo! Sports. "That's the truth. I'm not going to hide from it. I understand the business. … I thought this was going to be a dream. It's been a nightmare."  Williams was frank when speaking to Yahoo! Sports, but no one can argue this marriage between Williams and Jerry Jones had, and still has potential.

Williams is guaranteed at least one more year in Dallas because of his contract and how much the Cowboys gave up to get him.  If Williams does not improve it will likely be his last.  With youngsters like Ogletree, Hurd, and Bryant waiting in the wings, the Cowboys are unlikely to continue with the experiment after this year.

While he is searching for answers, Williams knows that the responsibility is on him. "What am I going to do? How am I going to turn this whole thing around?" Williams asked. "What's happened here, it's on me to figure it out. It's on me to fix it."

He will have at least one more season to get it going or it could be the end.

Browns LB Scott Fujita Speaks out for LGBT Rights

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 08:46 PM PDT

Current Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita is speaking out, and doing so for LGBT equality.

"I have a unique family history," he explained. "My parents went through internment camps during World War II and there experience has taught me to stand up for the rights of everybody – equality across the board regardless of what the issue is. This issue has come alive has come alive in the last couple of years and it's been important to me because equality to me is the most important thing."

There has never been an NFL player to be openly gay during his career.

"It'll happen one day," Scott said. "Whether everybody is ready for it at this point I don't know to be honest with you. But I think by and large, NFL locker rooms are a lot more tolerant than they get credit for. These issues are discussed."

Chargers and Norv Turner Look for “Redemption”

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 06:48 PM PDT

Good news for Chargers fans. Coach Norv Turner and his team seem to have a bit of a chip on their shoulders. After losing to the New York Jets in last year's playoffs after ending the regular season with a 13-3 record, the Chargers are bent on returning to the playoffs and redeeming themselves for losing such a crucial game that they easily could have won.

"That one is hard to take," Turner said while talking on XX Radio in San Diego. "That one won't leave until we get back into that position again. I think that's the way our guys feel. I think that is going to push and drive us, not only through the off-season, but it's going to push and drive us through the whole year."

With the 2010 playoffs behind him, he hopes that his team can take a good look at how they performed and how they can be better prepared come playoff time this upcoming season.

"We had a great year, but we didn't finish it the way we wanted to. To get the redemption we want, we need to get back to that spot and play the way we are capable of playing," said Turner.

The Chargers have struggled to find their rhythm in the playoffs in the past few years. Despite the third best record since 2004 (67-29), with only the Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots doing better, they have a dismal playoff record of 3-5 and are the only one of those three teams to have not won a Super Bowl in that period of time. As fans continue to grow more and more anxious and impatient to see at least a Super Bowl appearance, Turner has got to be feeling the pressure.

Well Turner's head seems to be in the right place, and so does his heart. Those two are a good start. Unfortunately, the only place that it truly matters in the NFL is on the field. So come next December, we'll see if that devastating loss really had as much of an effect as it appears to have had.

Bengals ink OG Isaac Sowells

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 03:22 PM PDT

Geoff Hobson over at Bengals.com reports that the team has signed OG Isaac Sowells to the offseason roster:

In an effort to give their offensive line some numbers, the Bengals on Tuesday signed fourth-year guard-tackle Isaac Sowells. The 6-3, 320-pound Sowells was a fourth-round draft selection by Cleveland out of Indiana in 2006. He played 17 games with the Browns in three years before they waived him just before the start of last season, and he sat out '09.

Looks like fodder for the OTA's to me, but who knows?  The team has had recent success with cast-offs like OG Evan Mathis and OT Dennis Roland.

What is clear is that the team will need to pare the roster down before camp.  League rules stipulate that only 80 players can come to training camp, and the team presently has 89 under contract, plus 9 draft picks to sign.  Certianly many of the CFA's should be nervous. Early favorites on the veterans to get their walking papers soon are DB Keiwan Ratliff, DT Orien Harris, S Rico Murray, and WR Freddie Brown.

Eagles CB Marlin Jackson Suffers Torn Achilles Tendon

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 03:19 PM PDT

The Eagles suffered a blow in the secondary today, as it’s being reported by PFT that CB Marlin Jackson suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right leg.

Eagles cornerback Marlin Jackson suffered a potentially serious leg injury during practice on Tuesday. And it indeed turned out to be serious. Jackson has ruptured the Achilles tendon in his right leg. The team announced the diagnosis after an MRI confirmed the injury. Jackson possibly will be placed on injured reserve.

Can the Colts make another Super run in 2010?

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 12:08 PM PDT

The Indianapolis Colts had a great run during the 2009-10 NFL season.

They had a 14-0 run and took a rest during the last two games of the season, which caused controversy.

Well, controversy no more!

Definitely.

The Colts made it to the Super Bowl, knocking off the Baltimore Ravens in the Divisional Round and then the New York Jets in the AFC Championship.

They sadly had a bad ending with a loss to the New Orleans, 31-17.

Now the Colts enter a new season with big changes.

So without a further ado, here are my expectations for the Indianapolis Colts as the 2010-11 NFL season comes up.

Enjoy!

Can The Running Game Finally Be In Effect?

When Donald Brown was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts as the 31st pick of the 2009 NFL Draft, it did cause a bit of controversy, since Indy had a running back in Joseph Addai.

But they brought him in to compliment number 29.

And it didn't go so well. Addai improved with his rushing game. Far better than the 2008-09 season.

The Colts did great in the Super Bowl and it brought me to something that the Colts can run the ball coming into the new NFL season.

I guess we'll see.

But the Colts need to running game to get into effect. They can't keep passing the ball most of the time. Establish the rushing game and make it strong again!

Is Joseph Addai the Difference?

Joseph Addai proved something these last two years when he couldn't run the ball well:

He's an all-around back and showed what else he could do.

He has made some amazing moves and has one of the best hands for a running back in the league. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if the Colts would put him at receiver at some points in a game next season.

Addai also blocks well, too.

I like what he is doing. If he can establish the rushing game more, he is on to a bright future.

So far, so good.

Can the O-Line Succeed?

I did not like how the Colts' offensive line was last year.

I mean, I was fine with how they did on protecting Peyton Manning and working pretty well on the passing offense plays.

But the running plays is where I had a problem.

When Jake Scott left, it really messed things up. They instead re-signed Ryan Lilja, who was later released this off-season.

And Tony Ugoh has been struggling lately and is moving to left guard. That's a good spot.

Right now, I just want the Colts' offensive line to succeed in the rushing game. Help gain some yards for Joseph Addai and Donald Brown.

It would be much appreciated.

Is Peyton Still the Man?

Heck yeah he is.

Enough said.

Can Jerry Hughes Make Impact?

I really didn't see a problem with the Indianapolis Colts drafting TCU defensive end/linebacker Jerry Hughes.

Hughes is going to be a name to remember. Remember it, Colts' fans.

Book it.

There's a bunch of contract issues going on with Robert Mathis and the defensive end attack with Mathis and Freeney won't last forever.

So it's best to get Hughes.

Hughes is a fast and physical defensive player and will be an important player for years to come. But can he make impact this year?

I think so.

The Colts should use him a lot around the defense. He will be in a little rotation.

I think he can make impact quickly.

What Is To Do With the Receivers?

The Indianapolis Colts will have a sticky situation with their receivers coming into the new NFL season.

Anthony Gonzalez is returning and what is to do with him? How about Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie?

I have a feeling the Colts might try to deal Gonzalez or move him down in the depth chart as a slot receiver or the number four option.

I think Garcon will be the number two receiver alongside with Reggie Wayne at number one.

Austin Collie and Gonzalez, maybe Sam Giguere, will battle for the slot position.

The Colts can't give up on Gonzalez just like that and Austin Collie came up big last season. Giguere is expected to be the next Wes Welker, so he could be used well.

I guess we'll see how things go once training camp and the pre-season comes.

Can Bob Sanders Re-Establish Himself as the Leader?

I guess I wrote it on here a while ago. You can just go back to the previous archives I guess to read more on that.

The season looks to be bright for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2010-11 NFL season. It's going to be fun.

Breaking down the Bears WR Core come opening day

Posted: 01 Jun 2010 07:44 AM PDT

In the third of our series of posts exploring how the Bears 2010 opening day roster will shake down, we look at the young position group that was perhaps the biggest question mark heading into last year.

Now, less than a year later, some folks are ready to anoint them the second coming of the 1999-early 2000s St. Louis Rams Greatest Show on Turf.

Yes, we're talking wide receivers…

Lock: Devin Hester, Johnny Knox, Devin Aromashodu, Earl Bennett

Limbo: Rashied Davis, Juaquin Iglesias, Eric Peterman, Freddie Barnes

Prediction:

At the WR spot, the question isn't really whom will stick…it's how many. After Hester, Knox, DA and Earl, that leaves one or two guys that are going to be used sparingly on offense, but regularly on special teams. I think the battle comes down to Davis and Iglesias. So with that, ladies and gentlemen…

The case for Davis: He's been a solid special teams contributor for years. His veteran presence could be an asset if one or two guys ahead of him get hurt.

The case for Iglesias: He showed flashes (in practice) late last year to warrant a place on the game day roster. He also has relatively high draft credentials (third rounder), and Angelo likes to give those fellas at least two years to pan out.

Okay, I've convinced myself to keep them both, giving the Bears six WRs on the opening day roster. Case closed.

Predicting the Bears wide receiver group is about as easy as this little exercise is going to get. Next time, we'll take a look at the position that could force one proven player to find employment elsewhere – tight end.
