Posted: 28 Jun 2010 03:49 PM PDT NFC East: Offense QB: Tony Romo – NFC’s top improviser. Easily buys time. Consistently prolongs plays. Combined with dynamic supporting cast, over/under 4,000 yards, 30 touchdowns. RB: Felix Jones – Most feared home run threat RB. Big-play ability=expendable Marion Barber. Electrifying open field runner. Just as dangerous as pass catcher. Starting to realize potential. Guaranteed 1,500+ total yards. FB: Leonard Weaver – Picks up tough yards in third and short. Excellent hands. Plays key role. Hands full in Philly’s offense. Undervalued contributor. WR: DeSean Jackson – NFC’s best receiver with YAC. Presence gives Jeremy Maclin 1,200+ yards. Explosiveness is unmatched. One play game-changer. WR: Hakeem Nicks – Next Brandon Marshall, minus baggage. Nightmare to tackle. Red zone mismatch. Fell to late 1st? TE: Fred Davis – Close call. Donovan will bring out best. Needed more than Celek and Witten. 8-9 touchdowns. OT: Jamaal Brown, Trent Williams. OG: Leonard Davis, Chris Snee. C: Andre Gurode Defense DE: Trent Cole – About as productive as they come. Reliable as run stopper. Force to be reckoned with as pass rusher. Most irreplaceable DL. DE: Justin Tuck – Solid as a rock. Knack for ball. Always making plays. Impact cannot be underestimated. DT: Jay Ratliff – Really coming along. Attracts double teams. Size-strength combo draws attention. Lightning-quick for nose tackle in 3-4. LB: DeMarcus Ware – Crowd pleaser. Tremendous skill set. Will not be silenced. Superior instincts. Will he impress us even more? LB: Brian Orakpo – The next DeMarcus Ware? Only going to get better. Plays with chip on shoulder. LB: Michael Boley – Flourishes to make up for loss of Antonio Pierce. Steps in to lead. Keep an eye on him. LB: Stewart Bradley – Returns stronger than ever after missing ‘09. Performance will earn trip to Honolulu. CB: Asante Samuel – Most daring ball hawk. Always around the ball. Incredible closing speed. Expect 2-3 defensive scores. Ability to win you a game. CB: Terrell Thomas – Narrowly edges Big D’s 1-2 punch and teammate Corey Webster. Eclipses last year’s output. Aggressiveness lands him spot. S: Kenny Phillips – Antrel Rolle gets the pub, he receives the nod. Former Hurricane will feed off Rolle. Outstanding talent waiting to shine. S: Nate Allen – Another case where his teammate (Quintin Mikell) is more recognized. Rookie from USF makes impact right away unlike fellow rival LaRon Landry of Washington. I feel he’s going to make a lot of GM’s and QB’s upset. |
Researchers Say Bengals WR Chris Henry Had Brain Damage Posted: 28 Jun 2010 03:38 PM PDT Researchers who analyzed samples of Chris Henry's brain have released results indicating that the late WR had an undiagnosed condition known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. It is believed the condition is caused by multiple, repeated head trauma. Symptoms include problems with impulse control, failed business and personal relationships, memory loss, depression, and eventually, dementia. The research was headed by Julian Bailes, Director of the West Virginia University's Brain Injury Research Institute. Bailes received authorization from Henry's mother to perform the analysis. CTE causes a build up of harmful proteins in the brain which affects the proper function of neural fibres. The report estimates at least 50 professional athletes have been diagnosed with the condition, including former Steeler Justin Strzelcyzk and wrestler Chris Benoit, both of whom met untimely and tragic ends resulting from mental instability. Mike Webster, the former longtime Steelers Center who suffered from serious depression, has also been considered a candidate for CTE. It seems that the infirmaty, if validated, could cause the NFL to have to seriously re-think its stance on head injuries and protective equipment. The symptoms certainly seem to align themselves with Henry's erratic behavior during his short life and career. The NFL should take this issue seriously, as should the NCAA and local youth football programs. Protecting players should be the primary focus of any sport, and the league would be wise to address it proactively rather than wait for the lawsuits to start rolling in. |

Alex Marvez of Foxsports reports that the meeting will take place within the next few weeks, and will likely be looked at similarly to the situations of Joey Porter and Braylon Edwards, neither of which received a suspension. Goodell had this to say about the situation.

Who’s Out at the Ravens QB Spot – Smith or Beck? Posted: 28 Jun 2010 01:51 PM PDT The haze of Summer is finally upon and with it things are normally very quiet around the NFL. However that hasn't stopped the Baltimore Ravens from making some noise this past week when they added three veterans to provide the team withdepth and flexibility. I'll admit that the most surprising addition was Marc Bulger, who agreed to a 1-year deal at about 3.8 million dollars last Wednesday. It's not that I didn't think it was a good move I just didn't think about the need to upgrade the quarterback position. But then again that's why Ozzie makes the big bucks. There is no question Bulger is an upgrade over both Troy Smith and John Beck. If Joe Flacco goes down with an injury the Ravens can now turn the offense over to a two-time former Pro Bowler who is an experienced hand in the NFL. But where does that leave Smith and Beck? If you think about it the coaching staff told us all we needed to know about what they think about both players last season. Joe Flacco limped through the back end of the regular season with multiple injuries and wasn't nearly the same player we saw earlier in the year. But there he was taking almost every snap. That should have been a clue as to what Baltimore thought about it's backups. We know that the Ravens won't carry four quarterbacks this season, so who stays to secure the third spot on the depth chart? All signs would seemingly point to Troy Smith being shown the door. He's been somewhat vocal through his agent that he wants a chance to start and reportedly would "crawl to Cleveland" to get his opportunity. So I can't see him being content at settling into the three spot in Baltimore. The last thing that this team needs as they gear up for a potential Super Bowl season is dissension in the locker room. At best the Ravens would hope for a 6th round pick for Smith from a team that has quarterback issues and would be willing to part with it. Perhaps Buffalo? Or would they simply release Smith and allow him to shop himself around the league? You always like to try to get something to a player in return but in this case in may make more sense to cut bait. But the again maybe it's John Beck. If you follow the depth chart he was already third in line. Now that the team has signed Bulger wouldn't that make him fourth? Beck did play for Cam Cameron back in his Miami days and is familiar with the offense but he hasn't done much to distinguish himself as an indispensable player. Or maybe both men are gone. If Bulger passes his physical and appears to have plenty left in the tank Baltimore may feel the need to drop both and pick up a cheaper option for the 3rd spot. Honestly most third stringers are inactive on game day anyway so that could be an area to save a few bucks. So I leave it to you. Who stays and who goes? |

Steelers RT Colon Suffers Achilles Injury During Workout Posted: 28 Jun 2010 12:07 PM PDT
Colbert said that the club is waiting for results of an MRI on Colon to see how bad the injury may be. “It is confirmed that offensive tackle Willie Colon has suffered an Achilles injury while working out today,” Colbert said in a statement this afternoon. “He is still undergoing further evaluations by Steelers’ medical personnel and we will not have anything more to release at this time.” While it’s not official, anytime you hear Achilles injury, you right away fear the worst, which could be the case here as well. Losing Colon would be a huge injury on the teams O-line to say the least. |
