Former Bucs and Raiders DT Warren Sapp Takes a Shot at Redskins DT Haynesworth

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 08:59 PM PDT

It seems like just about everyone and anyone is taking shots these days at Redskins unhappy DT Albert Haynesworth. The latest is former Bucs and Raiders D-lineman Warren Sapp, who was quoted in the Washington Post as saying Haynesworth needs to step up.

Warren Sapp is one of the best NFL defensive tackles in recent memory, and he also isn’t a particularly shy fellow. So when he was asked about Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth over the weekend, the results were worth noting.

“Let’s stop the BS, like we like to say,” Sapp told Vic Carucci and Howard Balzer on SiRIUS NFL Radio. “I mean, c’mon, son. You sat at the table. The people told you they had a very lovely check for you….Albert Haynesworth, you took the check, now show up to the job, son. It’s that simple. You take that kind of check. I mean, I’ll flip dogs for you. I mean, c’mon, what you want me to do, you want me to return punts? I mean, what? C’mon. Stop it. Stop it. Stop it.”

One of the hosts pointed out that Haynesworth even had issues with Greg Blache last year, when the Skins were running a 4-3. “How about he had issues with showing up for the Cowboy game and the Eagle game,” Sapp countered. “I mean, if a body part’s not missing, you’re showing up for division games. Are you kidding me?”

Saints QB Brees Says Favre Will Be Back in Minnesota in 2010

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 04:08 PM PDT

There’s been plenty of chatter about Brett Favre coming back or not to Minnesota in the 2010 season, but one guy that that beat Favre in the NFC Title game last January – Drew Brees, seems to feel there’s no doubt Favre will be back.

Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees knows his Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints have the most challenging 2010 regular season opener possible — a rematch of last season’s NFC championship game against the Minnesota Vikings. And Brees fully expects quarterback Brett Favre to be on the field for that Sept. 9 clash at the Louisiana Superdome, playing as well as ever at age 40. “I don’t think there’s any doubt that Brett Favre is coming back, and he’s going to be as good as he’s ever been,” Brees said Monday in an interview with FanHouse.

“We’re going to need our best game to beat him, I know that. They’re a good team. A very good team.” The Saints’ overtime victory over the Vikings in the conference title game – thanks in large part to a Favre interception late in regulation — pushed New Orleans toward its Super Bowl XLIV win over the Indianapolis Colts and the first Lombardi Trophy for a city and franchise long accustomed to defeat and associated with frustration. “There has been some chatter back and forth between our team and their team, and I just kind of hear about it. I don’t really do much of it,” Brees says of the Vikings this offseason. “Listen, we know that’s going to be a big game.”

2010 All-NFC East Squad

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 03:49 PM PDT

NFC East:

Offense

QB: Tony Romo – NFC’s top improviser.  Easily buys time.  Consistently prolongs plays.  Combined with dynamic supporting cast, over/under 4,000 yards, 30 touchdowns.

RB: Felix Jones – Most feared home run threat RB.  Big-play ability=expendable Marion Barber.  Electrifying open field runner.  Just as dangerous as pass catcher.  Starting to realize potential.  Guaranteed 1,500+ total yards.

FB: Leonard Weaver – Picks up tough yards in third and short.  Excellent hands.  Plays key role.  Hands full in Philly’s offense.  Undervalued contributor.

WR: DeSean Jackson – NFC’s best receiver with YAC.  Presence gives Jeremy Maclin 1,200+ yards.  Explosiveness is unmatched.  One play game-changer.

WR: Hakeem Nicks – Next Brandon Marshall, minus baggage.  Nightmare to tackle.  Red zone mismatch.  Fell to late 1st?

TE: Fred Davis – Close call.  Donovan will bring out best.  Needed more than Celek and Witten.  8-9 touchdowns.

OT: Jamaal Brown, Trent Williams.

OG: Leonard Davis, Chris Snee.

C: Andre Gurode

Defense

DE: Trent Cole – About as productive as they come.  Reliable as run stopper.  Force to be reckoned with as pass rusher.  Most irreplaceable DL.

DE: Justin Tuck – Solid as a rock.  Knack for ball.  Always making plays.  Impact cannot be underestimated.

DT: Jay Ratliff – Really coming along.  Attracts double teams.  Size-strength combo draws attention.  Lightning-quick for nose tackle in 3-4.

LB: DeMarcus Ware – Crowd pleaser.  Tremendous skill set.  Will not be silenced.  Superior instincts.  Will he impress us even more?

LB: Brian Orakpo – The next DeMarcus Ware?  Only going to get better.  Plays with chip on shoulder.

LB: Michael Boley – Flourishes to make up for loss of Antonio Pierce.  Steps in to lead.  Keep an eye on him.

LB: Stewart Bradley – Returns stronger than ever after missing ‘09.  Performance will earn trip to Honolulu.

CB: Asante Samuel – Most daring ball hawk.  Always around the ball.  Incredible closing speed.  Expect 2-3 defensive scores.  Ability to win you a game.

CB: Terrell Thomas – Narrowly edges Big D’s 1-2 punch and teammate Corey Webster.  Eclipses last year’s output.  Aggressiveness lands him spot.

S: Kenny Phillips – Antrel Rolle gets the pub, he receives the nod.  Former Hurricane will feed off Rolle.  Outstanding talent waiting to shine.

S: Nate Allen – Another case where his teammate (Quintin Mikell) is more recognized.  Rookie from USF makes impact right away unlike fellow rival LaRon Landry of Washington.  I feel he’s going to make a lot of GM’s and QB’s upset.

Researchers Say Bengals WR Chris Henry Had Brain Damage

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 03:38 PM PDT

Researchers who analyzed samples of Chris Henry's brain have released results indicating that the late WR had an undiagnosed condition known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.

It is believed the condition is caused by multiple, repeated head trauma. Symptoms include problems with impulse control, failed business and personal relationships, memory loss, depression, and eventually, dementia.

The research was headed by Julian Bailes, Director of the West Virginia University's Brain Injury Research Institute. Bailes received authorization from Henry's mother to perform the analysis.

CTE causes a build up of harmful proteins in the brain which affects the proper function of neural fibres. The report estimates at least 50 professional athletes have been diagnosed with the condition, including former Steeler Justin Strzelcyzk and wrestler Chris Benoit, both of whom met untimely and tragic ends resulting from mental instability. Mike Webster, the former longtime Steelers Center who suffered from serious depression, has also been considered a candidate for CTE.

It seems that the infirmaty, if validated, could cause the NFL to have to seriously re-think its stance on head injuries and protective equipment. The symptoms certainly seem to align themselves with Henry's erratic behavior during his short life and career.

The NFL should take this issue seriously, as should the NCAA and local youth football programs. Protecting players should be the primary focus of any sport, and the league would be wise to address it proactively rather than wait for the lawsuits to start rolling in.

Report Says Titans QB Young to Speak to Commissioner Roger Goodell

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 02:03 PM PDT

It has been reported by Foxsports.com talk that Vince Young will soon meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about his misdemeanor assault charges stemming from the events at a Dallas strip club.

Alex Marvez of Foxsports reports that the meeting will take place within the next few weeks, and will likely be looked at similarly to the situations of Joey Porter and Braylon Edwards, neither of which received a suspension.

Goodell had this to say about the situation.

"I think you have to look at these cases individually and understand them in a way of what are the issues going on with any individual," Goodell said.  "The intent of the [Personal Conduct Policy] is to intervene so you help some individuals make a better decision and avoid these troubles.  So when I sit down and look at all the facts around Vince or any other player, you want to make sure they understand that and what the policy was designed to do and more importantly understand the responsibility [of being an NFL player]."

Who’s Out at the Ravens QB Spot – Smith or Beck?

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 01:51 PM PDT

The haze of Summer is finally upon and with it things are normally very quiet around the NFL.

However that hasn't stopped the Baltimore Ravens from making some noise this past week when they added three veterans to provide the team withdepth and flexibility. I'll admit that the most surprising addition was Marc Bulger, who agreed to a 1-year deal at about 3.8 million dollars last Wednesday. It's not that I didn't think it was a good move I just didn't think about the need to upgrade the quarterback position. But then again that's why Ozzie makes the big bucks.

There is no question Bulger is an upgrade over both Troy Smith and John Beck. If Joe Flacco goes down with an injury the Ravens can now  turn the offense over to a two-time former Pro Bowler who is an experienced hand in the NFL.

But where does that leave Smith and Beck? If you think about it the coaching staff told us all we needed to know about what they think about both players last season. Joe Flacco limped through the back end of the regular season with multiple injuries and wasn't nearly the same player we saw earlier in the year. But there he was taking almost every snap. That should have been a clue as to what Baltimore thought about it's backups.

We know that the Ravens won't carry four quarterbacks this season, so who stays to secure the third spot on the depth chart?

All signs would seemingly point to Troy Smith being shown the door.

He's been somewhat vocal through his agent that he wants a chance to start and reportedly would "crawl to Cleveland" to get his opportunity. So I can't see him being content at settling into the three spot in Baltimore. The last thing that this team needs as they gear up for a potential Super Bowl season is dissension in the locker room.

At best the Ravens would hope for a 6th round pick for Smith from a team that has quarterback issues and would be willing to part with it. Perhaps Buffalo?

Or would they simply release Smith and allow him to shop himself around the league? You always like to try to get something to a player in return but in this case in may make more sense to cut bait.

But the again maybe it's John Beck.

If you follow the depth chart he was already third in line. Now that the team has signed Bulger  wouldn't that make him fourth? Beck did play for Cam Cameron back in his Miami days and is familiar with the offense but he hasn't done much to distinguish himself as an indispensable player.

Or maybe both men are gone.

If Bulger passes his physical and appears to have plenty left in the tank Baltimore may feel the need to drop both and pick up a cheaper option for the 3rd spot. Honestly most third stringers are inactive on game day anyway so that could be an area to save a few bucks.

So I leave it to you. Who stays and who goes?

Report Says Vick Makes Call to Police About Shooting

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 01:47 PM PDT

The Hampton Roads Virginian-Pilot is reporting that Eagles QB Mike Vick made a call this morning to police about the shooting that took place last week and what he knows about the case.

Michael Vick voluntarily called Virginia Beach police this morning and went in to answer questions about Friday morning’s shooting at a Town Center restaurant, his attorney said today. Vick and his attorney, Lawrence H. Woodward Jr., spoke with a detective about what happened at Vick’s birthday bash before the shooting. Woodward said Vick left the party about 30 minutes before shots were fired. Vick’s childhood friend and onetime dogfighting co-conspirator Quanis Phillips was thrown out of the party before the shooting and ended up in the hospital with a bullet wound, Woodward said. Authorities have yet to say directly that Phillips was the victim of the shooting. “Michael voluntarily cooperated with the investigation, went in on his own and answered all the police detective’s questions,” Woodward said today.

Steelers RT Colon Suffers Achilles Injury During Workout

Posted: 28 Jun 2010 12:07 PM PDT

The Steelers got what could be devastating injury news today as it is being reported that right tackle Willie Colon suffered an Achilles injury while working out at the Steelers practice facility on the South Side this morning. Steelers Director of Football Operations Kevin Colbert confirmed the injury this afternoon.

Colbert said that the club is waiting for results of an MRI on Colon to see how bad the injury may be.

“It is confirmed that offensive tackle Willie Colon has suffered an Achilles injury while working out today,” Colbert said in a statement this afternoon. “He is still undergoing further evaluations by Steelers’ medical personnel and we will not have anything more to release at this time.”

While it’s not official, anytime you hear Achilles injury, you right away fear the worst, which could be the case here as well. Losing Colon would be a huge injury on the teams O-line to say the least.
