SeahawksGab Presents the Friday Three Wide Poll Questions Posted: 06 Aug 2010 08:05 PM PDT With the final hours of Friday winding down, the start of football games every weekend until February is within sight. That in mind, SeahawksGab presents the “Friday Three Wide”, taking its reader interactive “Seahawks Sound Off” into overdrive. Newly signed rookie left tackle Russell Okung is the focus of the first of the Three Wide’s poll questions. Okung’s contract, reportedly in the neighborhood of $30 million guaranteed, cost the highly touted rookie five days of practices; however, he remains atop the depth chart in charge of protecting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s blind side. There’s fear about rushing him into things too quickly though, especially when thinking about possibly putting him in a position to get hurt. Which leads us to our question, how long do you wait till you let Okung take the field in a preseason game? survey services Both Okung and Seattle’s other first-round pick, safety Earl Thomas, have received starting nods from day one; however, which will have a bigger impact this season for the Seahawks? customer surveys Rounding out SeahawksGab’s first-ever Three Wide, we turn to the issues that plagued the Seahawks the most last season and how they could impact the 2010 version of the team. Saturday I answered five questions that need to be answered during Seahawks training camp in order for the team to succeed. Of the five, which is the most important? survey tools

Cowboys DE Spears to Miss 4-6 Weeks Posted: 06 Aug 2010 04:56 PM PDT Of all the position groups on the team, none are as good a friends as the defensive line. A trend started by former Cowboy Jason Ferguson, the Cowboys D-line are not just friends in the trenches, but also off the field as well. That is why it is hard to see a comrade fall, especially in practice. On one of the last plays of yesterdays practice, DE Marcus Spears felt someone role up on his leg and down he went. Spears will likely miss the rest of the preseason and maybe even the first game of the season with a sprained MCL in his knee. Stepping up for Spears will be 5th year man Jason Hatcher. Hatcher is a better pass rusher than Spears, but is a little smaller and not as effective against the run. The Cowboys are very high on Hatcher and have been looking for a way to get him some more reps and playing time, now they have that chance. The Cowboys feel that, while Spears is a big loss, the young guys can, and will, step up. ""Marcus Spears is a really solid part of our defense," Phillips said. "He's going to be where he's supposed to be. He's a smart player and a physical player, so we'll miss him in the preseason." Phillips went on to add, "Jason Hatcher needs to play anyway, so it's a good opportunity for him. That's what we're looking forward to, we wanted to see him get some more playing time." Whatever happens, the D-Line is one of the deeper positions on the Cowboys, and hopefully they can rally around Hatcher and continue to excel against both the run and get more of a pass rush in the process. |
Leonard Little Still Not Sure About Coming Back in 2010 Posted: 06 Aug 2010 04:51 PM PDT Leonard Little is still in limbo as far as playing in 2010 for the Rams or any other team in the NFL. Little has only played for the St. Louis Rams in his 12 years in the NFL. Little was a revelation early in the season in 2009 before he ran out of gas. He almost single-handedly won the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Little was interviewed by the Post-Dispatch.
It is obvious Leonard is weighing something personal that is not football related. Little can still play in the NFL as a situational pass-rusher. Little is home in the Charlotte, NC working out and potentially sorting out his personal issues. If Little feels ready to play in the NFL in 2010, the Rams will probably be his first call. Best of luck to Leonard taking care of what he needs to in his personal life and quickly returning to the Rams. |
Rookie Left Tackle Russell Okung Reportedly Agrees to Terms with Seahawks Posted: 06 Aug 2010 09:24 AM PDT The collective exhale heard throughout the Northwest minutes ago could only mean one thing, Russell Okung has reportedly agreed to terms on his contract. According to the Twitter of ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Seattle’s first pick in the 2010 National Football League Draft has agreed to the wording of a contact that will span six years worth $58 million, with $30 million guaranteed. The news comes two days after being the subject of SeahawksGab’s first Seahawks Sound Off, a new reader interactive poll segment. Mortenson also reported via his Twitter that Okung should take the practice field this weekend. Can't get enough NFLGridironGab? Some NFL Lines For Week One Head Scratching Posted: 06 Aug 2010 09:12 AM PDT
That weekend will for sure be a SportsUntapped weekend with all the great college football Saturday and then Sunday the NFL slate hits for real. For those that are into NFL betting, here are some of the lines for that first weekend of action that have to have you wondering what exactly Vegas is thinking. Pittsburgh (-1) over Atlanta – I know the game is in Pittsburgh, but the Falcons are a 10-12 win team, and they will play a Steelers team without their franchise QB Ben Roethlisberger. As of today, the Falcons steal one on the road to get off to a fast start. Tampa Bay (-1.5) over Cleveland – Game in Tampa, but does anyone really believe that the Bucs are better than the Browns? I don’t and I think that a revamped Browns team that is banking on Jake Delhomme at QB is going to get off to a quick 1-0 start with Jerome Harrison running over a weak TB run defense. Jacksonville (-2) over Denver - Are the Broncos really that bad to go on the road and lose to a J-Ville team that to me looks like a 5-6 win team? Remember the Broncos got off to a fast start in 2009, but then faded down the stretch. Kyle Orton will have a good enough day and the Jags offense other than Maurice Jones-Drew isn’t that explosive to get the job done. So there’s a couple early games in week one to keep your eye on. For those that are wondering my thoughts on the Super Bowl betting right now – I’m on a Colts-Packers bandwagon, as I think this is the year that Aaron Rodgers and the Pack reach their level with a club that can challenge anyone in the league. |
Bills and First Round Pick RB C.J. Spiller Come to Terms Posted: 06 Aug 2010 07:39 AM PDT
Many feel that Spiller is going to be the feature back with the Bills, while both Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch will be fighting him for carries throughout the 2010 season. While Spiller will for sure start as a backup, he’ll quickly take over the starting role for the club. |
Vikings Writer Zulgad Recounts the Story of Favre Texting He Was Retiring Posted: 06 Aug 2010 07:32 AM PDT Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune's Access Vikings set off a media blitz on Tuesday when he reported that Brett Favre was texting teammates and Vikings officials that he intended to retire once and for all. The day was crazy, and before I was eating lunch that day, many of the pundits were reporting that Favre was retiring… not that Favre just texted some people that he was retiring. A day later, the media and fanbase did another about-face, and it was determined that Brett Favre was not going to retire. Zulgad himself said that he was 99.9% sure that Favre was going to return to the Vikings for another season. Then, Favre and agent Bus Cook used various outlets to put the message out there that he has not made a decision, and that he would play if his ankle were healthy. Of course, that happened after the Vikings reportedly offered him a substantial raise with the hope of coaxing him back. So, the question on everyone's mind was "what the hell happened here!?!" Ever since this happened, Zulgad has been under fire from readers commenting from behind their cloak of anonymity and also from Twitter users. People say that he messed this up. People say he made this up. Some have even gone so far as to say this whole thing was a media conspiracy to create some Brett Favre news when there was nothing else to report. If you remember, Zulgad penned a very earnest article about a year ago this time which called out the Vikings for their handling of the Favre situation the first time around. I had trouble believing that somebody who was so fed up with the drama a year ago would be so apt as to purposely create more drama when none was necessary. So, I decided to ask him some questions on the matter (and a few other matters) and he was kind enough to oblige. Judd is the best in the business when it comes to covering the Minnesota Vikings and, as always, I encourage you to check out Access Vikings by clicking here or to follow him on Twitter by clicking here. Here is Judd's account of how things happened the last few days: Adam: Recently you reported that an unnamed source told you that Brett Favre was texting teammates that he was contemplating retirement. Was there more than one unnamed source? Anything more you can tell us about the source? Judd: I really can't get into any source issues because these people trust me based on the fact that I protect them. I can say that I am 100 percent sure every part of what I wrote about Favre was and is correct. Believe me, if I felt I made a mistake I'd admit it. Please don't read this as being defensive, rather, I just want to convey how confident I feel about the reporting that has been done not only by myself but others, such as Jay Glazer of Fox Sports and Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press. I have no idea who Jay and Jon's sources were but they were right on the money. AW: That report sparked quite the uncontrollable wildfire of reports. It wasn't long after your report that NFL Network and ESPN were basically telling audiences that Favre was retiring. Were you surprised how things played out? JZ: Yes. My story — and others — made it clear Favre told teammates and team officials he was going to retire. However, in the next breath, I wrote that this did not mean Favre was retiring. In fact, I was sure he would change his mind and he did. That's why I think that a lot of people didn't really read the story. They either looked at the headline or just saw what they wanted to see without digesting the information. AW: Who jumped the gun first? You or the National Media? Or the hack bloggers of the world (i.e. me)? JZ: The only guy who jumped the gun was Brett Favre. He sent a message to people and then decided he didn't mean it and wasn't truthful when asked about it on Wednesday. That's what I've been trying to tell people. The guy to look at in this case isn't the media, it's Brett Favre. And don't say, "Well, you guys should just leave Favre alone until he makes up his mind." That is not a realistic response and, in fact, we all should be fired if we simply just wait for Favre to say what he wants to do. AW: I noticed people shooting you quite a bit of venom via Twitter about the whole thing, even though Visanthe Shiancoe confirmed your report. Do you think its fair criticism you've been receiving? JZ: I don't know. It doesn't bother me because I know I'm right. People are passionate about Favre. That's good. The man helps sell newspapers and drive Internet traffic. At the end of the day, I'm a sportwriter. It's a great job and I love it but I'm not saving lives or fighting fires or keeping people safe. If people want to get upset with me because they don't like what I've written about Favre that's OK. The only thing I tried to explain to them is that just because Favre said something that doesn't mean he was telling the truth. AW: Shortly after the report, you said that you are 99.9% sure that Favre will return. Many people viewed that as you turning a complete 180 in the matter of a day. Was that the case, or were you 99.9% sure prior to the "text" reports? JZ: Never changed my mind. I reported on what is a very fluid story and what obviously was an emotional decision by Favre. We all know Favre changes his mind frequently and that's being kind. That's why I wrote that he told teammates he was going to retire and then quickly added that didn't mean he was retiring. I never changed my opinion; I just wrote what was happening. I still think he comes back. AW: Anything else you would like people to know about what happened in the last 72 hours of Favre-a-palooza? JZ: Yes, I added a ton of Twitter followers and I think many of them don't even like me. Nonetheless, I appreciate their business. AW: How's training camp going for you? JZ: Great. Long days but once again I have a great job and would NEVER complain about it. AW: Got any opinions on the position battles that might surprise a few people? JZ: I think Jamarca Sanford is going to push Tyrell Johnson for the starting strong safety job in a big way. Also think Asher Allen could find his way into the nickel role this season and earn some playing time. Finally, the fact Adrian Peterson has been sitting out because of tightness in his leg appears to be a good thing for Albert Young and Toby Gerhart. Both are getting plenty of reps. AW: You recently said that reporting on Deadspin.com's allegations against Brett Favre was not your job. Why is that and do you think mainstream media outlets will shy away from that one? JZ: I don't know what's going to happen with this story. Let me correct myself on one thing. If my editor at the Star Tribune tells me to cover it, then I will cover it. It's not my job to tell them what I will or won't do. However, a story that breaks on Deadspin isn't something that we would run with until we report it out and confirm it. And in any situation like that it has to be considered on a case-by-case basis. Believe me, I have my hands full right now just covering Favre as a football player. AW: Again, thanks for clarifying for us what happened in the last few days. We appreciate your coverage of the Vikings and hope you can stay cool enough down there in Mankato. Don't be a stranger to Vikings Gab! JZ: Thanks. I really enjoy your web site and check it out on a frequent basis. Keep up the good work and I appreciate you giving me a chance to answer your questions. |

Ravens Release Veteran CB Walt Harris Posted: 06 Aug 2010 07:23 AM PDT
A first-round pick (13th overall) out of Mississippi State by the Chicago Bears in the 1996 NFL Draft, Harris has 35 career interceptions in a 14-year career that has also included stints with the Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins, and San Francisco 49ers, where Harris spent the previous four seasons. Harris went to his only Pro Bowl in 2006, his first season with the 49ers. |
