Hall of Fame Game Preview – What to Look for From the Bengals Posted: 07 Aug 2010 07:58 PM PDT When: Sunday, August 8, 2010, 8:00 PM Where: Fawcett Stadium, Canton, OH. TV: NBC in HD The months of agony and baseball-only television are finally over. Tomorrow night we get our first glimpses of that blessed entertainment known as NFL football. Under normal circumstances, the annual Hall of Fame Game kicks off the league's pre-season and gives fans throughout the country (including myself) some football to watch. Finally. This year, as a devout member of Bengaldom, there's even more reason to salivate in advance of the game as our team participates for the first time since 1988. That game, a 14-7 victory over the then-Los Angeles Rams, was the first win in what became an AFC Championship season and berth in Super Bowl XXIII. As this year's game approaches, the Bengals find themselves loaded with talent on both sides of the ball, carrying with them championship aspirations and high expectations. They'll face a Cowboys team similarly optimistic about their prospects in 2010. But don't anticipate a street brawl or slugfest as the preseason in general, and the first preseason game in particular, are for player evaluation. Schemes are watered-down, strategic game-plans aren't employed with any sophistication, and starters barely see the field. That's not to say that there won't be a myriad of reasons to watch. Here are just a few things to look for during Sunday night's telecast:
These are just a few of the Bengal sub-plots to look for as the game approaches. I anticipate that the starters will play about 2 series. Starters that look to sit out the game with ailments include LB Rey Maualuga, CB Johnathan Joseph, FB Fui Vakapuna, and Bryant. Back-ups OT Andre Smith, DE Carlos Dunlap, and RB Cedric Peerman look to be rested as well. Bengals.com was unsure of whether starting RE Antwan Odom and nickel back Morgan Trent's availability as they recoup from minor dings. Just remember, we have three primary objectives Sunday Night:
Winning the game is secondary. Perhaps, as we all hope, this game will be the start of something great. Perhaps we'll see this same Cowboy team in February. It's great to dream big. For now, it's great to just see football. |
Patriots WR Wes Welker Sends a Message to Jets Coach Rex Ryan Posted: 07 Aug 2010 07:56 PM PDT ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter made a visit to Patriots training camp yesterday, here is the full story, Schefter spoke with wide receiver Wes Welker on the ESPN training camp tour bus. Welker told Schefter, "My goal is to get out there on the field as soon as possible and Week 1 is definitely something I'm shooting for. We'll see what happens." New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan twenty four hours earlier broke the mold by not only signing his name on the ESPN training camp tour bus, but added "soon to be champs" as well. Welker responded in typical Patriots fashion by signing his own name on the New England logo and adding the phrase "one game at a time." Welker looked directly into the camera filming, and repeated the mantra. "One game at a time." Wes Welker has not missed a single practice, and returned to full contact drills late this past week after being removed from the active/physically unable to perform list. Patriots middle linebacker Jerod Mayo greeted Welker with the first big hit on the shifty slot machine during 11 on 11 drills Thursday. "I just wanted to welcome him back, Mayo told reporters Friday. He was excited to get that little thud in, just to make sure he was back all the way, it's better to do it out here than in the game." Wes Welker's recovery after under going reconstructive surgery on his left knee just over six months ago has been incredible to say the least. Welker had a reputation as one of the toughest players in the league prior to the injury, but his determination to be in the starting lineup Sept. 12th versus Cincinnati has cemented his tough guy status around the league. Welker chose not to respond directly to Jets head coach Rex Ryan's "soon to be champs" prediction, but responded in the same way he approached recovering from knee surgery this past off season. One day and one game at a time. |
NFL Gridiron Gab Picture Of The Day Posted: 07 Aug 2010 07:00 PM PDT Ah, the days of hazing and messing with the rookies in NFL training camps across the country. Some call it cruel, I think it is a rite of passage when you’re a rookie 1st-round draft pick. By the way, do not adjust your PC monitor. Nonetheless, Denver Broncos rookie Tim Tebow was not exempt from this annual activity. Perhaps you can crfedit the Broncos if for anything else being creative in their approach to hazing rookies. At first glance, you’ll think of Robin Hood and maybe The Smurfs (think Gargamel). Personally, I think it is genius. Carrying veterans’ baggage and the like is so 2008. I will assume that Tebow possesses a sense of humor. |
Posted: 07 Aug 2010 05:57 PM PDT The Rams placed veteran defensive tackle Chris Hovan on Injured Reserve today to free up a roster spot for another player. Head Coach Steve Spagnuolo stated that they did not know how long he was going to be out whether it was going to be "5 days or 5 weeks" and they could not afford to lose the roster spot. So, Hovan goes on the IR with a back injury. No word right now when he will be able to come off the IR. Chris Hovan would have been in competition for one of the rotational spots at defensive tackle for the Rams with Gary Gibson, Fred Robbins, Cliff Ryan and Darell Scott. If the Rams kept 4 defensive tackles on the roster, Hovan probably would have been looking from the outside in on that group. Ryan is the only solid starter in the group, but the Rams could have a good rotational situation if all stayed injury free. |
