Seattle Will Get Offensive Line Help this Week

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 04:17 AM PDT

Russell Okung has an ankle sprain.  Ben Hamilton, a sore knee.  Just when Seattle could use some help the most along the offensive line, the team will get it this week.

According to Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times, Chester Pitts will take the practice field today as Seattle prepares for its Thursday matchup against the Oakland Raiders.  Pitts has been recovering from microfracture surgery and, at one point, was thought to miss much of the beginning of the regular season.

Vikings QB Favre says he’s been getting injections in bad ankle

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 08:01 PM PDT

The big story today involves word that #4 has already been getting injections in his ankle, and now seems to be more ready than ever to admit he has no idea if the ankle is going to hold up at 40 years old this season.

As usual though, this could all be a smokescreen, and at the end of the day he could know that he’ll be fine, and the ankle will respond. If not though, and if things go the way they are, this really could blow up in Brad Childress’ and the Vikings face.

After his so-so eight series Saturday night on the hard floor of Mall of America Field, Brett Favre went into the trainers’ room in the Vikings locker room and got an injection of lubricant in the left ankle that has three times been operated on to remove loose bodies. “Like a grease fitting,” he said. Noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews did the most recent surgery May 22nd and Favre feels better, but not really that good. Favre said Dr. Andrews made two incisions on the top of his left ankle, where the ankle flexes above the foot, and sucked out the loose bodies. He said Dr. Andrews wasn’t surprised a significant spur returned when Favre went for a re-exam a month ago — but he was surprised it happened so fast. The Vikings will attempt to manage the pain the spur brings on, but Favre said he didn’t think he’d take any painkillers stronger than Motrin. “It’s catching up with me, all this stuff,” said Favre. “My ankle just seems to get easier to sprain. I know everyone thinks the New Orleans game [the NFC Championship Game] killed me, but it was bad before then. Now we’ll see if I can make it. My mind’s telling me one thing, but my body’s telling me something else.”

For now, Tarvaris Jackson and company had better stay ready, and there’s good reason to believe that the teams starters could find themselves on the field Thursday night in the preseason finale.

Titans to take a look at former Bengals WR Antonio Bryant?

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 07:51 PM PDT

Injured receiver Antonio Bryant will see a lot of interest if he soon becomes healthy, and the Titans may very well be one of those teams. His knee has been troublesome during camp, but their is no doubt Bryant could deliver in the Titans offense. He could be the solid number one receiver the Titans have desperately lacked.

Bryant has put up solid numbers the last few years, and showed his talent throughout the 2009-10 season. The ceiling for Bryant is endless. He could help spread the field for Chris Johnson and deliver a sure handed wide-out for Vince Young.

ProFootballTalk has reported that if Bryant is healthy before the end of the season, he may file a grievance report against the Bengals.

Bills coach Chan Gailey not ready to name C.J. Spiller the teams starting RB

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 07:34 PM PDT

Bills coach Chan Gailey was quick on Monday to put an end to any rumors that C.J. Spiller was going to be handed the teams starting running back job, saying that there’s a long way to go before Spiller is going to be the starting back.

“We don’t know how that’s going to shake out.” With RB Marshawn Lynch (high ankle sprain) set to play in Thursday’s final preseason game after joining the team for a walkthrough on Monday and RB Fred Jackson (broken hand) planning to return for the team’s opener, Gailey has a wealth of options at the position. “We’ve got the luxury of three pretty good backs so, we’ll make that decision when we get closer there,” he said. “They may all be in there at the same time, you never know, on the first play of the game.” Spiller, the 9th overall pick in this year’s draft, has lived up to his hype so far this preseason. He’s recorded 122 yards and 3 TDs on 26 carries in 3 games, looking every bit as speedy and powerful doing it, as evident in a 31-yard tear vs. Indianapolis and an equally explosive 20-yard dash vs. Cincinnati last week. Still Gailey contends Spiller hasn’t shown him anything he didn’t already expect. “I think we had a pretty good idea of what he could do. To say that all he’s done is verify that would sort of be an understatement. I think we understood it and I’m excited about his year.”

Texans RB Slaton has turf toe, sure he’ll ready for the opener

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 07:29 PM PDT

According to HoustonTexans.com Steve Slaton's strained toe has been diagnosed as turf toe.  Turf toe has typically put an unbearable crutch on runners in the NFL, almost always inhibiting them below "100%" on the field.  For Slaton, he remains positive that he'll be ready Week 1 at Reliant Stadium against the Indianapolis Colts:

"It'll get better.  It's not too, too bad. I'll be ready. It'll heal with treatment. (I've got) plenty of time."

According to Orthopedics.about.com, Turf toe is a condition of pain at the base of the big toe, located at the ball of the foot. Turf toe is usually caused from either jamming the toe, or pushing off repeatedly when running or jumping. The most common complaint is pain at the base of the toe, but patients may also have symptoms of stiffness and swelling.

Head & Shoulders take out a $1 Mil insurance policy on Troy Polamalu’s hair

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 04:21 PM PDT

While Troy Polamalu is worth plenty to the Steelers, he may actually be worth just as much to hair-care company Head & Shoulders.

Or at least his hair is.

The company has taken out a $1 million dollar insurance policy on the safeties hair to ensure his trademark locks won't get damaged during the NFL season.

The company made the announcement Monday, noting that it was the first time in history that an insurance policy of this type had been ordered. According to a press release from Head & Shoulders, his hair is so thick that, end to end, it spans 1,100 football fields and can hold approximately 24,062 pounds.

"Head & Shoulders has gone above and beyond by insuring my Samoan locks for a cool $1 million dollars," Polamalu said. "This reinforces that my full and thick hair is unstoppable."

Polamalu became a spokesman for the company last year. He has not cut his hair in seven years.

Broncos release former Raiders RB Justin Fargas

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 04:18 PM PDT

The Broncos Monday came to the conclusion they no longer needed Justin Fargas on the roster, as the team released the former Raider running back. Fargas got a carry Sunday night in the win over Pittsburgh, but didn’t overall see a lot of action.

The Broncos made two more roster moves Monday by releasing running back Justin Fargas and waiving injured cornerback Tony Carter. Fargas, the former Oakland Raider, was signed during the second week of training camp. He got only one carry in Sunday's game against Pittsburgh.

Carter spent most of 2009 on the Broncos practice squad but was promoted to the active roster late in the season and played in two games, with one start. He missed all of last week with a hamstring injury and did not play in Sunday's game.

The team feels that running backs Knowshon Moreno, Correll Buckhalter and LenDale White will all be ready to go once the season starts, and they no longer felt they needed to carry Fargas on the roster.

What would it take to end the Darrelle Revis holdout?

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 01:04 PM PDT

As the Darrelle Revis holdout continues into its 30th day, there appears to be no progress on contract talks between the two sides. With only 14 days left until the Jets host the Ravens to open their season, time is running out for a deal to get done.

With the Gary Meyers of the NY Daily News takes a look at what would end the Revis holdout.

- He agrees to the 10-year, $122 million deal that Jets have offered since Memorial Day weekend. It initially contained $40 million in injury guarantees, but no fully guaranteed money. Before the Revis camp and the Jets agreed to impose a news blackout more than two weeks ago, Revis' agents were saying not one penny was fully guaranteed, a fact the Jets have disputed. I believe Revis will sign this long-term offer if about $30 million is fully guaranteed.

- The Jets agree to Revis' proposal – 10 years, $160 million with about $30 million guaranteed. There is obviously enough total dollars in the 10-year counter proposals that this is about guaranteed money and the structure.

- Revis agrees to the four-year, $40 million Band-Aid that increases his 2010 salary from $1 million to about $5 million and adds a year to his contract. Again, there has to be major guaranteed money since he voided a potential $20 million guaranteed in his old deal when he didn't show up for camp.

Looking at the first deal, I doubt Revis accepts that. If his report is true and it's been on the table since Memorial Day, then Revis would have accepted it if he wanted it and based on the second figure he gives, he obviously wants more. Also I don't think the Jets will cave to Revis's demands ($160 over 10yr) and it would be foolish to do so. It would set a bad precedent for other Jets who want a new contract saying if you hold out then we will give you whatever you want. Also, that deal would be far beyond market value. Nnamdi Asomugha got that kind of money for a three year deal and he was also an unrestricted free agent. When Revis becomes an unrestricted free agent, then he can ask for that money and expect to receive it.

The third option seems like a long shot that I don't think either side, especially Revis, really wants to do. As mentioned above, Revis forfeited the $20 million guaranteed by holding out, so it appears like he's looking for a long term deal. As a fan, I wouldn't love that deal either because then he would receive another mega contract while still in his prime (29).
