Preseason Week Four Preview: Seattle at Oakland

Posted: 01 Sep 2010 03:30 AM PDT

Thursday Oakland Coliseum plays host to two long-time rivals that are searching for the answer to the same question: how do you turn around a franchise that's entrenched in losing?

The Oakland Raiders and the Seattle Seahawks were one-time division foes that faced each other 50 times during a 25-year stint in which both played in the AFC West.

The Raiders haven't taken the field for a playoff game since 2002.  In that time, the team's gone through five coaches and 11 starting quarterbacks.  Complicating things is the fact that picking atop the draft board in the annual rookie Draft hasn't paid the kind of dividends one would hope for.  The team's former quarterback of the future, JaMarcus Russell, is out of the league.  The team's game-changing running back coming out of college, Darren McFadden, has failed to eclipse 500 rushing yards in his two seasons as a professional.  The team's newest offensive threat, wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, inked nine catches in the record book during his rookie season in a Raider uniform.

Seattle hasn't been much better in recent years.  After claiming the NFC West Division Championship for four consecutive years, the Seahawks have fallen to the bottom of barrel.  Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, along with his offensive line, have seen their better days.  Both have aged and become riddled with injuries.  Hasselbeck alone missed 11 games over the past two seasons.

The 2010 season will showcase new names for both teams that could change the tide of recent performances.

Oakland traded with the Washington Redskins to bring in quarterback Jason Campbell.  Campbell, with his ability to make plays out of the pocket when necessary and his strong arm, provides the Raiders a quarterback that should meet owner Al Davis' penchant for big plays.

On the other side of the ball, the Raiders spent their top pick in April's Draft on a run-stuffing middle linebacker.  At Alabama, Rolando McClain earned several honors including the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top collegiate linebacker.  Behind the on-field direction of McClain in his final season in Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide ranked fourth nationally in total defense and second in rush defense.

Seattle also drafted a defensive anchor in 2010.  Former Texas safety Earl Thomas showcases a reported 4.45 40-yard dash time and hands that dismiss and gobble up passes, be them on target or errant, with ease.

Helping to solidify the other side of the line of scrimmage, the team spent its first draft choice in April on a left tackle that was tabbed the team's starter from day one.  Oklahoma State product Russell Okung was one of the nation's top prospects along the offensive line in this year's Draft.  Known as a protector from early on in his life when he helped stabilize his family, Okung will be looked upon to keep quarterback Matt Hasselbeck's blind side stain free and to help open up holes for a running game that hasn't featured a 1,000-yard rusher since 2005.

Packers: Roster Moves & Camp Headlines

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 06:39 PM PDT

Jclombardi reviews roster move, camp reports, & headlines.

Guest senior writer jclombardi @ http://lombardiave.com

Roster Moves:  Packers place Starks, Harris & Bigby on PUP, Porter to IR. Harris, Bigby on PUP to  Packers Reach 75 Limit.  Packers CB Harris to start season on PUP list, miss first 6 games. In no surprise moves to get to the required 75 roster players, the Packers put S Bigby, CB Harris, and RB Starks on the PUP reserve list meaning they will miss at least the first six weeks of regular season. Meanwhile, they put RB Porter on injured reserve. The final season roster must be cut to 53 by 5 p.m. Saturday. Analysis:  "The Packers' decision to not add either a free agent or a draft pick in the offseason at cornerback looks downright puzzling right now.  Packers may make some sort of deal for CB and/or S, like they did with Martin. Rookie CB Shields was a lock to make the roster meaning the cuts make it so that RB Lumpkin and CB/S Bush have just about locked up spots."

Camp Headlines & Highlights: Tuesday's practice: The Roundup. Packers relatively healthy aside from a few notable injuries.  No. 1 offense and defense will play one series of Thursday night's game at the Chiefs. Highlights from today's practice included a finger tip grab in the endzone by TE Quarless and a S Martin tipped interception off of QB HarrellLooking back at camp–34 players missed at least one practice in camp because of injuries.  The offensive side had few injuries except for OT Clifton.  The defensive side of the ball has some injuries, especially to the linebackers. However, LBs Matthews and Jones will be ready for the season opener.  CB Harris and S Bigby missed the entire preseason.  KR/PR/S Blackmon struggled to come back from a severe surgery.  DE Jenkins is still recovering from an injury.  Positives: with injuries, rookies S Burnett, CB Shields, LB Zombo, DE Neal, OT Bulaga, & WR/KR/PR Chery got preseason game experiences to hopefully help them make immediate impacts when the real season begins; the punting will be vastly improved with probable pick P Masthay; the offense looked super especially Rodgers & Finley. Finale: TT had an outstanding draft knowing his current veteran players, but OLB and CB depth are still issues.  Injury report–Out: P  Bryan (birth of child), S Bigby (ankle), S Blackmon (knee), CB Harris (knee), CB Underwood (shoulder), RB Porter (knee), RB Starks (hamstring), LB Matthews (hamstring), LB Bishop (hamstring), OT Clifton (knee), DE  Jenkins (calf), OL Barbre (back). LB Jones returned to practice today. Horror-of-it-all: Yes, fans, it looks like DE Harrell will be given another year try along with CB/S Bush.

More Super bowl hypeQB Rodgers is on the cover of Sports Illustrated. The NFL Preview issue set to be released shows #12 behind C Wells.  The magazine features an article by Peter King that predicts the Pittsburgh Steelers over the Packers in Super Bowl XLV.

Season over for Patriots CB Leigh Bodden, placed on IR

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 04:53 PM PDT

The New England Patriots were dealt a crushing blow to their rebuilding defense on the injury front with the announcement that the team has placed starting cornerback Leigh Bodden on season ending injured reserve Tuesday.

Bodden, who tied for the team lead with five interception last season, has a significant shoulder injury (believed to be a rotator cuff injury), the team announced. Bodden has also been battling a knee injury which sidelined him earlier in the preseason.

Without Bodden, that leaves second year man Darius Butler, and rookie Devin McCourty as the probable starters at cornerback for Week 1. His roster spot may now go to Terrence Wheatley, who was on the bubble prior to this latest news.

The Patriots also placed safety Josh Barrett (shoulder), defensive back Brett Lockett (chest), and defensive lineman Darryl Richard (foot) on injured reserve. Defensive back Terrence Johnson was released as the Patriots cut down their official roster from 80 to 75 players.

The loss of Leigh Bodden (the veteran presence in a secondary full of youngsters) is a huge loss for the Patriots who have already lost defensive end Ty Warren and offensive lineman Nick Kaczur for the season. Stay tuned for more news on the Bodden injury in the coming days.

Clayton: Jets Sanchez ranks 23rd in QB rankings

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 03:48 PM PDT

John Clayton released his annual quarterback rankings, which are sure to stir up a lot of debate among NFL fans. He ranked the quarterbacks into three categories: The Elite, The Chad Pennington Division (can't tell if that's a compliment or slight), and The Hit-Or-Miss Division. So where did Jets young quarterback Mark Sanchez rank on Clayton's list?

23. Mark Sanchez, New York Jets

Analysis: The additions of Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes at wide receiver and LaDainian Tomlinson catching passes out of the backfield should allow Sanchez to be a 60 percent thrower. Another ally will be the motion packages offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer can install now that Sanchez has a year of experience in the offense.
Chance of being elite: 50 percent

He has Sanchez above the likes of other young quarterbacks Chad Henne, Matthew Stafford and Sam Bradford. Though, Stafford and Bradford have a greater chance of being elite. Surprisingly, Clayton gives Braford an 85% of becoming elite, which seems way too for a guy that has never thrown a pass in an NFL game. But then again, Clayton also consider Carson Palmer elite so who really knows what he is thinking. Back to Sanchez, he has all the tools to become elite, he just has to put it all together and be more consistent. He will never lead the league in yards or touchdowns, but can be a great quarterback for a long time in this league. He's a long, long way away from that right now and for this season I'd be happy if he can cut down his interception total to a reasonable number (say 15).

Fantasy football primer for the Ravens

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 02:45 PM PDT

So, you've decided to play Fantasy Football huh? Well then you've come to the right place. Here's a look at some of the Ravens choice fantasy players who may just help your team achieve greatness. Go ahead, start gloating now, it's OK, we don't mind waiting.

Joe Flacco, Quarterback,  3613 yards, 21 TD, 12 INT

This year's up and coming fantasy golden boy. Seem's like the NFL is quickly and quietly becoming Wacco for Flacco. Joe had a damn decent fantasy football season last year despite lackluster talent around him and an injury marred second half. Add in newcomers Stallworth and Boldin, a rejuvenated Todd Heap, and a somewhat easier schedule and that could spell great things for the young gunslinger. Joe is no longer just a solid backup option, he's evolved into a decent starting option in medium to large depth leagues. If you've got 12-16 players drawing QB's, Joe could be a good option for you in rounds four through eight.

Ray Rice, Running Back, 1339 yards Rush, 703 yards Rec, 8 TD, 3 Fumbles

The lilliputian superstar broke out in a huge way last year coming up just shy of Chris Johnson for the league's most all purpose yards. Ray Rice is the Ravens' best fantasy position piece and is tracking to go in the top 3-4 overall picks in most leagues. Don't count on picking him up unless you're drafting high in the first round. As for his stats this year much will depend on what the Ravens decide to do with Willis McGahee. Although Rice had a huge increase in his touchdown totals last year, Willis was scavenging a lot of his points late in the season. When it comes to playoff time Rice may hurt you more than he helps you. Also worth keeping an eye on is how Cam Cameron decides to position the offense. With the revamped passing offense, one would expect to see a sharp decline in the number of receiving targets that Ray Rice enjoyed last year.

Willis McGahee, Running Back, 544 yards Rush, 85 yards Rec, 14 TD, 1 Fumble

The self-proclaimed Mr. January, Willis McGahee is the perennial handcuff to Ray Rice. Long gone are the days when you could count on him for the monster yardage, McGahee serves primarily as a touchdown vulture. With near double the TD production of Ray Rice, Willis has a lot of value for deeper leagues and can be had in the later rounds of most any draft.  He's not going to put up +10 points a game, but he will be a consistent threat to find the end zone and score you much needed points week in and week out. He's especially valuable towards the fantasy post-season, when his carries usually increase.

Anquan Boldin, Wide Receiver, 1024 yards Rec, 4 TD, 3 Fumbles

The Ravens' answer to Hines Ward, Anquan Boldin comes into Baltimore with massive expectations. Although largely overshadowed by Larry Fitzgerald in Arizona the last two seasons, Boldin looks to have a career year with the Ravens, hopefully returning to his 2008 numbers wherein he recorded +1000 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns. Boldin is a tough as nails gritty receiver who has made a living churning out yards after the catch. He's currently the number two rated Ravens fantasy player behind only Ray Rice. Keep in mind though that as attractive as Boldin may seem, his numbers are similar to those of Derrick Mason, and will likely draw the double-team from opposing defenses.

Derrick Mason, Wide Receiver, 1028 yards Rec, 7 TD, 0 Fumbles

Reliable, steady, consistent, these are the words that describe Joe Flacco's faithful receiver Derrick Mason. Year in and year out he has been the anchor keeping the Ravens offense alive and thriving. Sometimes he's done it draped by two defenders, other times he's done it with only one arm. A lot of fantasy players have been shying away from Mason after the addition of Stallworth and Boldin, however before you give up on him keep in mind that the man has been consistently double teamed for the last three seasons and STILL managed to put up +1000 yards each year. Couple that with the fact that he's Joe's go to weapon, and can be had in most leagues around the 10th and 11th rounds, he should be a sleeper pick that could help you win a ton of games.

Todd Heap, Tight End, 593 yards Rec, 6 TD, 0 Fumbles

After two down seasons, it looks like the Heap of old may have finally returned. Coming out with a renewed sense of determination and urgency, Heap has looked absolutely stellar in his first three pre-season games. A lot of fantasy players may shy away from Heap due to the additions of Dennis Pitta and Ed Dickson respectively, but if you're in a deep league do not be afraid to take a flier. Heap has actual competition for the first time in his entire Ravens career, couple that with that fact that he won't be relied upon to play every down, block every player, and still manage to get open, and I think he'll have a great year fantasy wise.

This is by no means a comprehensive list, but in standard 8-12 team leagues these are the players most often being drafted according to stats reported by ESPN and Sports Illustrated. For the first time in a long time, there are a number of Ravens who are poised for some real fantasy relevance. Keep an eye on these players to come in under the radar and make a giant splash as the 2010-2011 season gets underway.

Patriots decide to keep RB Taylor – for now

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 01:53 PM PDT

According to ESPN Boston.com, the New England Patriots had informed running back Chris Taylor that he would be waived today and the running back was not at the team's practice. The Patriots waited until the 4 p.m. deadline to submit the transaction, and apparently had a change of heart. Taylor's agent, Martin Magid, said he received a call within the last hour that Taylor would not be released today.

Taylor spent last season on injured reserve, and apparently will be around at least until after the Patriots final preseason game Thursday night against the New York Giants.

At 4 p.m. today, the Patriots and the rest of the NFL will face their first cut deadline. The roster, which now stands at 80, will have to be trimmed down to 75. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick explained the process in his press conference yesterday.

"We talk to each player whatever his situation is," Belichick said. "Sometimes we release him. Sometimes they are in a PUP or IR type situation. Sometimes they are involved in a practice squad type of transaction. Whatever it is, we talk to the player. We talk to his representatives and try to get everybody on the same page."

Peter King at his Bengal-hatin’ best about Antonio Bryant

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 01:42 PM PDT

Peter King was in rare form in today's Monday Morning Quarterback segment in his criticism of the Bengals and their handling of the Antonio Bryant situation.  Here's an excerpt of King's harsh words:

Antonio Bryant: What a stupid signing.

One NFL medical person — don't want to be too specific — told me Sunday that the injury that is apparently plaguing fired Cincinnati wideout Antonio Bryant could be Chondral Defect of the knee. "If you're not looking for it, you won't find it," this official said. "It's a long-term knee problem that won't go away."

He goes on to lambast the club some more, even going so far as to assert that the Bengals were the only team interested in Bryant.

Unfortunately in this case, King isn't just spewing his usual "I hate everything Bengal" drivel.  In this particular instance, he has a good point.  How on earth did the club's medical staff clear Bryant?  How did it slip past the pro player personnel team?  How did it get past the coaches, who let Bryant suit up for the first practice of the season?  And why was the whole thing shrouded in more secrecy than a Politburo meeting with overly optimistic reports coming out of the club as late as Thursday?

The bottom line is the Bengals messed up on this one.  Terrell Owens, at 36, signed for roughly 4 million less than what Bryant got without playing a down, and T.O. has already brought more practices, more catches, and more buzz than A.B. ever could.  But then, the excitement stirred by Owens' signing may end up paying for the Bryant mistake and then some.

And when the team needs a big time play during a Super Bowl run, odds are they're better off looking to the new 81 than they ever would be looking at the original.

53-Man roster cuts Saturday for the Texans

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 01:40 PM PDT

The NFL mandated 53-man roster trim is set for Saturday, and the Texans' front office have lots a work ahead of them.  For the most part, many cuts will be predictable. However, the Texans have loads of talent, concentrated in certain positions, leaving the possibility of seeing many good players released.  The Texans are talent heavy at defensive tackle, wide receiver, tight end, and in the secondary, and it will be hard to see some good talent end up being released and end up elsewhere besides the practice squad.  Additionally, the Texans will have to make cuts in the offensive line,

At defensive tackle and nose tackle, the Texans have defensive tackles Amobi Okoye, Earl Mitchell, Malcolm Sheppard, Matt Unrein and at nose tackle Shaun Cody, Frank Okam and DelJuan Robinson. The line has been something the Texans have been working on improving for some time now, and it has paid off. The potential is there and the coaching has been paying off. Let's hope the Cowboys game wasn't a fluke.

At wide receiver, the Texans have Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter, Jacoby Jones, David Anderson, Andre Davis, Dorin Dickerson and Bobby Williams. Will Davis be cut with his large contract? Or will Williams be the easy cut?

The Texans tight ends include Owen Daniels (on the Physically Unable to Perform list), James Casey, Joel Dreessen, Garrett Graham and Derick Fine. Fine is the obvious cut due to Daniels being eased back, Dreessen's reliability and blocking ability, Casey's potential and improvement, and Graham's potential and insurance.

After Fred Bennett's release, the Texans cornerbacks include Kareem Jackson, Glover Quin, Brice McCain, Antwaun Molden, Jacques Reeves and Sherrick McManis. The Texans are pleased with McManis' play and might stay put with Reeves' 2008 free agent contract. Strong safety Torri Williams and free safety Nicholas Polk may end up on the practice squad.

Otherwise, the Texans linebacker situation has "issues" according to Kubiak and will likely stay put with Isaiah Greenhouse and Will Patterson closing out the position. Running backs Jeremiah Johnson and Chris Henry are battling it out and Johnson's may not have the speed but he's leading by a mile now. Chris White and Brett Helms are battling it out for the last center spot, and experience is on White's side. Helms was an undrafted rookie in 2009 and served on last year's practice squad. White competed, and then won by default the Texans starting center before starting center Chris Meyers arrival. There's been no change, except remnant memories of last season, in Kris Brown and Neil Racker's kicking competition. At kickoffs, each kicker's kicking for the end zone. Either hasn't missed a kick. The Tampa game is going to be huge, I'd scrap the Week 2 mentality in going for it where a 51-yard kick could be there to test the kickers.  Tackles Steve Maneri and Cole Pemberton will likely find themselves on the practice squad. Will either backup tackle Adam Stenavich or Rashad Butler receive a pink slip?

For now the Texans' front office have under five days to construct their final 53-man roster. From here on out, its only speculation but look for Preseason Week 4's match up at Tampa Bay to be the final audition for many Texan players.

Seattle, Linebacker Leroy Hill Restructure Deal

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 08:25 AM PDT

After being asked to stay away from the team for much of the offseason, Seahawks linebacker Leroy Hill now has taken a pay cut.

According to source cited by ESPN’s Mike Sando, the former star linebacker’s salary will now drop from $6 million to $2.125 million; however, Hill will have the ability of receiving $300,000 in incentives and a $60,000 roster bonus.

The agreement also eliminates the life of Hill’s previous contract, making him a free agent after the upcoming season.
