The Cardinals New Connection: Anderson to Fitzgerald Posted: 15 Sep 2010 07:55 PM PDT It's a connection that the Cardinals hope to get right sooner rather than later. Last Sunday, however, the two players' first taste of game action together, the connection was a little weak, though it wasn't for a lack of trying. Derek Anderson targeted Larry Fitzgerald 15 times, but only completed three passes for 43 yards. Luckily, one of those three was a game winning 21-yard touchdown late in the 4th quarter. Anderson doesn't seem to be worried about his timing and chemistry with the Cardinals' number one receiver. "Oh, we'll be good," Anderson remarked. "I know (Larry) is willing to work at it and get to where we need to be," Anderson continued. Fitzgerald believes it's more an issue of rehabbing his still troublesome knee, rather than anything else. "I've got to get my body together first," Fitzgerald said. "That's what is really important. Missing so much time … I think it's hurt us a little bit. We're not going to make excuses. This is the NFL and we've got to get right quickly." Darren Urban reports that Fitzgerald stated he was around 75% healthy for the game against the Rams. In addition, Whisenhunt reported that Fitzgerald's knee continued to deteriorate as the game wore on, which the head coach attributed to the unforgiving turf of the Edward Jones Dome. Ken Whisenhunt believes that Fitzgerald's knee will continue to improve, even as he plays. If that is the case, the rest of it will just be "getting a feel for each other," Whisenhunt said of Anderson and Fitzgerald. "Some of those plays, had Larry been at full capacity, he would have made, especially that one down in the end zone." The play that Whisenhunt is referring to occurred late in the third quarter. Anderson, from shotgun, had Fitzgerald with at least a step and a half on the Rams' safety Atogwe. Anderson's ball fluttered slightly out of Fitzgerald's reach as he dove headlong into the turf. The pass was definitely overthrown, but if Fitz is healthy he probably comes down with six points. Based on Whisenhunt's quote, it seems he feels the same. Maybe it's unfair to expect Fitzgerald to come up with show stopping plays as a matter of course, but it's something Cardinal fans and the NFL has become accustomed to seeing. It's a trend that Whisenhunt of course has noticed as well. "I think we've been spoiled the last two-and-a-half years because Kurt and Larry had gotten I don't know how many reps together," Whisenhunt said. "That will come. I know if I was a quarterback and I was throwing to Larry Fitzgerald, I would certainly have a lot of confidence." The Cardinals would certainly benefit from the boost in confidence and production that a smooth connection between Fitz and Anderson would provide when they take on the Falcons this Sunday. |
The Ravens version of the hit movie “The Expendables” Making an Impact Posted: 15 Sep 2010 06:17 PM PDT The "Expendables" Making An Impact It's Baltimore's version of the summer hit movie 'The Expendables.' In this case, a few talented players who did not fit into the plans of their former teams; they were deemed 'expendable.' These players found their way to the Ravens and are already making a positive impact for the team. Here's a look at the cast in the making: Anquan Boldin, WR – AKA: "Quan" or "Q" Traded by the Arizona Cardinals to the Ravens. Boldin is a physical receiver and playmaker. The move by GM Ozzie Newsome has already benefited the team's offense. Boldin's opening debut against the NY Jets included 7 receptions for 110 yards receiving. T.J. Housmandzadeh, WR – AKA: "Housh" Released by the Seattle Seahawks, the Ravens swooped in to sign the motivated wide receiver. Just signed a week before the Ravens first game versus the Jets, Housmandzadeh made a spectacular 27 yard catch in his first game with the team. He also drew a pass interference call to set up the Ravens only touchdown of the game. Talk about a competitor, 'Housh' was fired up after his reception. Expendables, Supporting Cast? Stay tuned…there will be more players who may make this 'expendables' cast. My guess is that defensive tackle Terrence Cody might just be next on the list. Terrence Cody, NT/DT – AKA: "Mt. Cody" Thought of as one of the premier nose tackles in college. Yet, he was passed up by several teams in the first round of the draft, that is until Baltimore selected him. Cody should fit in nicely with the Ravens tough run defense. Cody had a knee procedure and he may be ready to go by this Sunday when the team takes on the Cincinnati Bengals. |
Reid should turn to Vick to be the QB of the Eagles Posted: 15 Sep 2010 06:05 PM PDT
Vick has quietly stood on the sidelines while all the press in Philly was given to Kevin Kolb, who was handed the starting job when the Eagles traded Donovan McNabb to the Redskins on Easter Sunday. While he had the offseason incident at his birthday party, that is behind him and Vick should be given a fair shot to be a starter once again. Kolb has had an up and down career with the Eagles when given the chance to play, and while he can and may very well be a good QB when it’s all said and done, Vick brings more to the table. He has veteran experience, can still do damage with his legs, and seems to have a chip on his shoulder to prove that he can play at a high level in the NFL. Here’s a vote for Andy Reid to pull the plug on Kolb, at least for now, and go to Vick. The team needs to have a leader that has more snaps under center as well as more wins under his belt than Kolb, and Vick is that guy. |

Chargers Place LS David Binn on IR, Sign James Dearth Posted: 15 Sep 2010 05:35 PM PDT After sustaining a severe hamstring injury in Monday night's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, long snapper David Binn has been placed on injured-reserve, ending his season. Binn was injured during Dexter McCluster's 94-yard punt return touchdown, but stayed in the game despite the serious injury. Binn, who is in his 17th season in the league and with the Chargers, set a franchise record by playing in his 179th consecutive game against the Chiefs. His 17th season with the Chargers is also a franchise record. In response to the injury to Binn, the Chargers have signed unrestricted free agent long snapper James Dearth. Dearth, who snapped for the New York Jets for nine years, was with the Washington Redskins this offseason before he was released. He will now take over the snapping duties in San Diego. Terms of the contract were undisclosed. |
Rams Acquire Linebacker Bryan Kehl off Waivers from Giants Posted: 15 Sep 2010 05:33 PM PDT The Rams have claimed linebacker Bryan Kehl off waivers from the Giants. This may mean Chris Chamberlain is heading to the IR after all. Update: Another reason for acquiring Kehl: Josh Hull reportedly suffered a "major" MCL injury during special teams practice today. (ED note: Hull is now on IR to make room for Kehl). Kehl, 6?2? 237, is in his third season out of BYU and was drafted in the 4th round in 2008. Scouts Inc. grades him as a good backup with a nice combination of size and athletic ability. Solid tackler, hard hitter with sneaky-good speed and good range. Still more of an athletic prospect than a polished linebacker at this point. Needs work on taking on lead blocks and using his hands to keep blockers off his lower body. Other flaws are that he gets lost in traffic and gets too aggressive at times and overruns plays. More comfortable on the weak side. Quick and agile in pass coverage and takes smooth drops, but also loses focus at times and allows plays. GiantsFootballBlog calls Kehl a better fit in the NFL as a 3-4 OLB, which is what he was in college. GFB readers point out the team's poor kick coverage and Kehl whiffing on a block that allowed a punt to be blocked Sunday against Carolina as reasons he could have been cut. On the other hand, he led the Giants in special teams tackles last year with 16 and had 3 against the Panthers. The cut seems to have surprised the majority of Giants fans; he's a well-liked player and they consider him one of their best special teams players. He may have been cut just because the Giants have serious injury issues at tight end and had to make a roster move. Kehl was a mechanical engineering major at BYU, a two-time academic all-conference LB and a first-team all-conference player his senior season. His BYU Pro Day stats: 4.56 40, 4.18 short shuttle, 6.54 3-cone, 35? vertical, 10?2? broad, 26 bench presses. That would have been the 2nd-fastest 40 by a LB at this year's Combine. His numbers compare favorably to 2010 late 2nd-round pick Pat Angerer or late 3rd-round pick Navarro Bowman. He can bench 430, so he's strong, but he has had to work to be a more physical player after playing too passively as a rookie. Kehl's a high-character player with some ability, and this move could pan out better than anybody would ever guess, but for now, it's mainly a treading-water move to try to replace Chamberlain's special-teams productivity. I don't expect Kehl to be much of a contributor outside of special teams, but won't be surprised to see him in the long-term picture at LB. That makes this a better-than-average move, but not one that moves the needle a lot. Fun fact: As you might guess from that alma mater, Bryan is a Mormon. Other Mormons who have played for the Rams include Kevin Curtis, Brandon Manumaleuna, Merlin Olsen, of course, and, much to my surprise, Kyle Turley. |
